British Airways kitesurf equipment: fees, weight limits and how to pack

British Airways has no kitesurf category and no sports fee. Surfboards go as checked baggage, windsurf gear isn't carried at all, so get your kite bag confirmed on the online chat as soon as you book.

British Airways doesn't name kitesurfing in its sports equipment rules and has no separate sports fee. The closest rule is for surfboards: a board up to 240cm long and 75cm wide, under 23kg, travels as your checked bag. If your fare includes one, you pay nothing extra. A standard bag between 23 and 32kg costs £65 each way, but the surfboard rule asks for under 23kg.

This is based on British Airways' website on 25 October 2026. One thing I'd sort out before flying: BA doesn't accept windsurfing boards and sails as baggage at all. Get it confirmed that your kite bag isn't treated the same way. The general side of flying with kite gear (packing, claims) is in flying with kite gear: airline fees and packing.

What a return trip costs

It mostly comes down to your fare. Economy Basic has no checked bag, Economy with a checked bag includes 1 x 23kg. The table assumes BA accepts your kite bag the same way as a surfboard (then under 23kg), or as a standard oversize bag up to 190cm.

Situation Out + back = total
Kite bag only, under 23kg, fare with checked bag £0
Kite bag 25kg as a standard oversize bag, fare with checked bag £65 + £65 = £130
Kite bag + suitcase, or Basic fare the extra bag price for your route shows in Manage My Booking

BA doesn't list extra bag prices on its baggage pages. They depend on the destination and show up in Manage My Booking or the baggage calculator. Online is cheaper; once you've checked in, only the airport rate is available.

Basic or with a bag?

Basic or a fare with a bag: with a kite bag, I'd compare Economy Basic plus an extra bag both ways with the fare that includes 23kg. BA offers that option right when you choose your fare.

What's different about British Airways

Surfboards yes, windsurf no, kites not named

BA's sports list includes surfboards and kayaks; its restricted list bans windsurfing boards and sails from baggage. Kites aren't on either. So I wouldn't guess: as soon as you've booked, message the online chat (English only) with exactly what's in your bag. Save the reply.

Heavy bags per bag, not per kilo

BA charges per overweight bag, not per kilo. Between 23 and 32kg, it's a flat £65 per bag each way. For surfboards, though, BA says "under 23kg" in so many words, so get a heavier kite bag confirmed on the chat. The 23kg limit applies to each bag and can't be shared, not even within your group. Nothing over 32kg is accepted.

London City and Heathrow

The surfboard rule applies on all routes except through London City (LCY). If you have a choice of airport, I'd fly with the kite bag via Heathrow, or get the LCY conditions confirmed in advance.

Partner flights

Even under a BA flight number, a partner airline may operate the flight, and then the allowance may differ. On journeys with connections, the airline flying the longest flight generally decides. Your itinerary names the operating airline.

Batteries and CO2 cartridges

Power banks and spare batteries go in hand baggage only: at most 4 spare batteries per person, of which at most 2 power banks, all up to 100Wh. A life jacket with a CO2 cartridge has automatic approval on BA: at most 2 jackets, each with 2 small cartridges, plus 2 spares. It should travel in your checked bag, with a printed copy of BA's rules page packed alongside.

Practical tips

Before paying for the ticket, check:

  1. Fare: does it include a checked bag? Economy Basic doesn't.
  2. Bag length: surfboards up to 240cm, other oversize bags up to 190cm.
  3. Weight: surfboards must be under 23kg; get a heavier bag confirmed, as a standard bag it's £65 each way.
  4. Route: the surfboard rule doesn't apply through London City.

Allow extra time at the airport: oversize bags are dropped off separately, at least 90 minutes before departure. How to pack a bag that survives the baggage handlers is in kite board bags and flying with your gear.

BA flies from London to Lanzarote (about 4 hours from Heathrow) and to Fuerteventura, where flights move from Gatwick to Heathrow from December 2026 (about 4 hours 15 minutes). The spots on both islands are in kitesurfing in the Canary Islands.

On the kite safari in Egypt I go on, there are pumps and a compressor on board and a twintip costs €60 for 6 days (2026 prices), so you can leave the board at home. The kite safari packing list covers what else to bring.

Questions

Does British Airways accept kitesurf equipment?

BA's sports equipment rules don't mention kitesurfing. Surfboards up to 240cm long and 75cm wide travel as checked baggage under 23kg, while windsurfing boards and sails aren't accepted as baggage. Get your kite bag confirmed on the online chat as soon as you've booked.

How much does British Airways charge for sports equipment?

BA has no separate sports equipment fee. A surfboard counts towards your checked baggage allowance; without one, you pay for an extra bag by route. A bag between 23 and 32kg costs £65 (€75) per bag each way (25 Oct 2026), but a surfboard must weigh under 23kg.

Can I take a kite bag as normal checked baggage on British Airways?

For surfboards, yes: BA carries them as part of your checked baggage. Kites aren't named, so confirm on the online chat. Economy Basic fares include no checked bag, so you'd buy one.

What's the maximum weight for a kite bag on British Airways?

A surfboard bag must weigh under 23kg. In general no checked bag may weigh over 32kg, and a bag between 23 and 32kg over your allowance pays the heavy bag charge.
