Flying with kitesurf equipment: airline fees compared
You can fly with kitesurf equipment. Some airlines carry it in your allowance instead of a suitcase, others charge a fee for every flight, and a return trip can cost anything from €0 to over €300.
You can fly with kitesurf equipment, but the rules and fees vary enormously between airlines. Some carry your kite bag in your allowance at no extra fee instead of a suitcase, others charge a fee for every flight or direction. For the same bag, a return trip can cost €0 or over €300.
The comparison below is based on the airlines' own websites on 25 October 2026. Each airline has its own article with the details, linked from the tables. Fee tables change, so open them again before you book.
If you're still deciding where and when to go, start with planning a kitesurfing holiday.
Kitesurf equipment fees at 42 airlines (October 2026)
The "How it treats kites" column shows whether the airline names kitesurfing in its rules and whether the bag flies in your allowance or for a fee. Where the website doesn't say whether the fee is per flight or per direction, the price column says so.

What a return trip with your kite and board costs
The same example for everyone: 1 kite bag up to 20kg with kites, bar and board, direct flights out and back, no extra suitcase. I've only used fees the airlines publish. Where the website doesn't say whether you pay per direction, the sum is conditional.
In your allowance, no fee (if your fare includes a checked bag)
Here the bag flies instead of a suitcase, so you pay nothing extra. You need a fare with checked baggage and a bag within its limits.
| Airline | Return | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Lufthansa, Austrian, SWISS, Brussels Airlines | €0 | fare with a checked bag, board up to 200cm; Austrian may add €10-20 service fee |

| British Airways | £0 | fare with a checked bag; confirm your kite bag via chat |
| TAP | €0 | fare with a checked bag, bag up to 158cm total (a board hardly fits) |
| Royal Air Maroc | €0 | up to 23kg and 220 x 40 x 40cm; check for Eco Essential |
| Emirates, Etihad | 0 | fare with checked baggage (Emirates Special 20kg, Etihad Value 25kg) |

How to choose an airline without overpaying
Count the whole trip
An airline that carries kites in your allowance pays off when your clothes fit in your cabin bag and the kite bag can replace the suitcase. A Lufthansa or KLM fare with a checked bag then covers the kite too. Compare it with a cheaper low-cost ticket plus the fee in both directions: €/£120 on Ryanair, €110-130 on Wizz Air.
A low-cost airline with a fee makes sense when you fly direct on a cheap ticket: the fee is fixed and you know it in advance. With a connection, count every flight. Pegasus charges per flight, so a return trip via Istanbul is 4 fees. Turkish Airlines and Lufthansa charge per one-way trip even with a connection, SWISS per leg (a connection within 24 hours counts as 1 leg).
If the airline doesn't name kites (Ryanair, easyJet, Wizz Air, Eurowings, Volotea, Aer Lingus, SAS, Finnair, British Airways and others), get your bag confirmed in advance and in writing. Wizz Air wants approval at least 72 hours before departure, SAS 24 hours.
Watch each airline's weight limit: Ryanair 20kg, Jet2 22kg, Norwegian, Aer Lingus, ITA, Iberia, Air Cairo and Royal Air Maroc 23kg, Smartwings, easyJet, Wizz Air and Vueling 32kg. Wherever the fee table shows both prices, the airport price is usually higher than the online one.
How to pack a kite bag for a flight
For help choosing a bag that fits everything and survives the baggage handlers, see kite board bags and flying with your gear.
- Board: unscrew the fins and footstraps so they don't snap off or punch through the bag during loading. Put the screws in a zip bag and the zip bag in a pocket of the kite bag.
- Kites: fully deflated, in their own backpacks. A foil kite doesn't need a pump. For inflatables, find out whether there's a pump where you're going.
- Bar: lines wound up, bar in its cover or wrapped in a towel so the metal parts don't rub against the canopy.
- Padding: wetsuit, rash vest and towel around the board protect the rails and cost you nothing. Norwegian and Transavia, though, only allow sports gear in the bag, no clothes.
- Batteries: spare lithium camera batteries and power banks go in your carry-on only, with terminals protected against short circuits. IATA's 2026 guidance allows a maximum of 2 power banks up to 100Wh; power banks above 100Wh are forbidden. For spare lithium-ion batteries up to 100Wh, the usual limit is 20; above 100Wh and up to 160Wh, it's 2 with airline approval. Some airlines are stricter: Aegean, Emirates and flydubai allow only 1 power bank.
- Weight: weigh the bag at home. The easiest way is to step on the bathroom scale with the bag and without it and take the difference.
Weigh the bag again before the flight home. Get High with Mike weighed his own wet gear, including his wetsuit and harness: after hanging it up for 30 minutes, it was about 1kg heavier than dry. That's a result for his kit, which I'd avoid using to estimate the weight of yours. Even that extra kilo counts when you're at the limit.
I'd use the video for comparing airline baggage policies and organising a bag. Skip the advice about overloading bags, hiding heavy cabin baggage from staff or fooling the check-in scale. It was published in 2021, so check current airline rules and fees before booking.
If your bag is damaged or lost
Take photos of the bag and what's inside before you check it in. They help document its condition if something gets damaged. Under the Montreal Convention, the usual baggage liability limit is 1,519 SDR per passenger. SDR is an international monetary unit, so the euro equivalent depends on the exchange rate; compensation depends on proven loss, and the limit isn't an automatic payout or a separate allowance for every bag.
Complain about damage in writing as soon as you discover it, within 7 days of receiving the bag. For delay, complain in writing within 21 days of the bag being made available to you. Report a missing bag immediately. Claim for loss once the airline admits it is lost or it hasn't arrived within 21 days of the expected delivery date.
For more valuable gear, ask the airline about a higher limit in advance: it requires a special declaration of value by the time you hand over the bag and any applicable extra payment. Check what your insurance covers too. What to look for in a policy is in kitesurfing travel insurance: what to check.
When to bring only part of your gear
Bringing everything doesn't always make sense. If what you really care about is flying your own kites, and the kites, bar and harness fit into a normal checked bag, you can rent the board when you get there. On Finnair, a bag like that up to 23kg and 90 x 75 x 45cm travels in your allowance without notice. Whether renting beats bringing your own depends on how long you stay and what the rental costs. I go through the numbers in rent or bring your own kite gear?
On the kite safari in Egypt I go on, renting a twintip costs €60 for 6 days, or €300 for a full set of kite gear, also for 6 days (2026 prices). If you prefer practising on familiar kites, bring yours and rent just the board. Pumps and a compressor are on board. The programme includes morning and afternoon sessions and evening video coaching; you can take part with rented gear too. The kite safari packing list covers the other things to bring.
At the airport
Give yourself extra time. At many airports oversized bags are weighed at the normal check-in desk and then dropped at a separate counter or belt.
YouTube is full of tricks for cheating the check-in scale. I'd leave them alone. Nobody enjoys arguing about 2 kilos 40 minutes before departure, and on Ryanair and easyJet paying at the airport costs more than adding the weight or the sports item online in advance.
Questions
How much does it cost to fly with kitesurf equipment?
According to the airlines' websites on 25 October 2026, a return trip costs anything from €0 to over €300. Lufthansa, KLM, Air France, Emirates and Etihad carry it in your allowance instead of a suitcase, with no sports fee, if your fare includes a checked bag. Ryanair charges €/£60 per flight at booking (up to 20kg), Smartwings €90 per leg (up to 32kg), and Turkish Airlines €140 or €180 each way from the UK to Egypt via Istanbul.
Which airlines carry kitesurf equipment for free?
Within your allowance with no sports fee: Lufthansa, Austrian, SWISS and Brussels Airlines (a board up to 200cm on a fare with a checked bag), KLM and Air France (instead of a suitcase), and Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad, flydubai and Kenya Airways (within your fare's allowance; Qatar to Africa and the Americas only bags up to 158cm). Royal Air Maroc carries kitesurf gear up to 23kg and 220 x 40 x 40cm free; on the Eco Essential fare without a bag, get that confirmed. With the others, fares without a checked bag leave no allowance for the kite to use.
Do I need to tell the airline about my kite bag in advance?
With most airlines, yes. Smartwings wants it requested at least 48 hours before departure, Lufthansa and SWISS want it registered at least 72 hours ahead, Wizz Air wants kite gear approved via chat at least 72 hours ahead, and SAS and flydubai want at least 24 hours' notice. If the airline doesn't name kites, get acceptance confirmed in writing.
What if the airline damages or loses my kite bag?
Under the Montreal Convention, the usual baggage liability limit is 1,519 SDR per passenger; compensation depends on proven loss and the euro equivalent on the exchange rate. Complain in writing about damage as soon as you discover it, within 7 days of receiving the bag, and about delay within 21 days of the bag being made available to you. Report a missing bag immediately; claim for loss once the airline admits it is lost or it hasn't arrived within 21 days of the expected delivery date.
Do I need to bring my own gear on a kite safari?
No. On the safari I go on, a full kite set costs €300 for 6 days and a twintip €60 for 6 days (2026 prices). The compressor and pumps are on board, so you can leave your pump at home.
