Turkish Airlines kitesurf equipment: fees, weight limits and how to pack
Turkish Airlines carries kite gear, but on most routes as a paid sports item on top of your checked bag. The price depends on the zones you fly between and whether your gear counts as normal or large.
Turkish Airlines will carry your kitesurf equipment, but on most routes it's a paid sports item on top of your checked bag, not a replacement for it. With a connection in Istanbul, the fee table runs from €100 to €220 per one-way trip, depending on the departure and arrival zones and whether your gear counts as normal or large.
The exception: until the end of 2026, Turkish carries 1 piece of kitesurfing equipment within your checked allowance on trips to Manila, Male, Denpasar and Jakarta, and from Malaga, Bilbao, Seville, Toulouse and Bordeaux.
Everything below is from the Turkish Airlines website as of 25 October 2026. General advice on flying with kite gear (packing, batteries, claims) is in flying with kitesurf equipment.

What it costs return
Turkish uses a zone table for trips connecting in Istanbul. The UK and Ireland are in zone 3. Its own example (Skopje to New York for €140) shows the fee is per one-way trip, so a return trip means paying twice.
| From zone 3 to | normal | large | return, large |
|---|---|---|---|
| Egypt, Morocco (3) | €140 | €180 | €360 |
| Tanzania incl. Zanzibar (4) | €150 | €190 | €380 |
| Sri Lanka, Philippines, Maldives, Mauritius (5) | €160 | €200 | €400 |
Suitcase and kite bag separately
Kite bag plus suitcase: the suitcase uses your ticket allowance, the kite bag is paid on top. From the UK to Zanzibar, that's €300 (normal) or €380 (large) for the gear return, plus a fare that includes checked baggage. Watch EcoFly: Turkish says some EcoFly lines include no free checked baggage.
Just a kite bag up to 23kg: same prices as above. The sports fee depends on zones and size, not on how heavy the bag is.
What's different about Turkish Airlines
A kite bag doesn't replace your suitcase
The Turkish Airlines FAQ says you can't use your checked baggage allowance for sports equipment, apart from listed exceptions. Its general terms, though, say equipment that isn't on the sports equipment list is treated as normal checked baggage with no special fee, while the fee page says sports equipment not listed on the website is also charged separately. Kitesurfing isn't in the surf set list (surfboard, windsurf board, wooden deck, mast, sail). Because of that contradiction, I'd get the category confirmed during the mandatory reservation.
The exception until the end of 2026
Until 31 December 2026, Turkish carries 1 piece of kitesurfing equipment within your checked allowance on these trips and their returns:
- departing from Malaga, Bilbao, Seville, Toulouse and Bordeaux,
- arriving in Denpasar, Jakarta, Male and Manila.
You pay the fee for more than 1 piece or for a stopover of more than 24 hours in Türkiye. Your ticket allowance still has to cover the kite bag; the exception doesn't add extra weight.
Size and aircraft type
Surfboards are limited to 292cm long, 60cm wide and 23kg. The fee table states that sports equipment isn't treated as oversized baggage, so the oversize fee for bags of 158-292cm doesn't apply on top. Some aircraft types in the fleet can't carry items this size, which is why Turkish wants the dimensions at booking.
More than one airline on a ticket
On interline trips (another airline on the same ticket), zone 5 rates apply and you can't pay online, only through sales offices. Baggage rules then follow the carrier IATA treats as most significant, usually the one flying the longest leg. Fees and terms may also differ on AJet flights.
Practical tips
Before you pay, check three things:
- The zones in the Turkish fee table (prices from one departure zone vary by up to €40 per trip).
- How long you stop in Istanbul: more than 24 hours cancels the exception.
- A fare with checked baggage, if you're bringing a suitcase too.
Keep the payment confirmation and the baggage rules on your phone as screenshots. How to pack the bag so it survives the handlers is in kite board bags and flying with your gear.
Where kiters fly with Turkish Airlines
The exception routes are handy for the Philippines via Manila; Sri Lanka is in zone 5 with no kite exception. Zanzibar is in zone 4.
Egypt is in zone 3. On the kite safari in Egypt I go on, there are pumps and a compressor on board and a twintip costs €60 for 6 days to rent (2026 prices), so you don't have to bring a board. The kite safari packing list covers the rest.
Questions
Does Turkish Airlines accept kitesurf equipment?
Yes, as sports equipment in the hold. It only names kitesurfing gear in an exception: until 31 December 2026, 1 piece flies within your checked allowance on trips to Manila, Male, Denpasar and Jakarta and from Malaga, Bilbao, Seville, Toulouse and Bordeaux. Elsewhere you pay a zone-based fee.
How much does Turkish Airlines charge for sports equipment?
With a connection in Istanbul, the fee ranges from €100 to €180 for normal size and €140 to €220 for large, per one-way trip, depending on the departure and arrival zones (fee table checked 25 Oct 2026). Surfboards count as large.
Can I take a kite bag as normal checked baggage on Turkish Airlines?
Generally no. Turkish says you can't use your checked baggage allowance for sports equipment, apart from listed exceptions. Kite gear is one of those exceptions only on certain routes until 31 December 2026, for 1 piece, with no stop in Türkiye longer than 24 hours.
When do I need to book sports equipment with Turkish Airlines?
For surfboards a reservation is mandatory and you must give the dimensions, as some aircraft types can't carry items that size. Online, you can add it from 355 days to 2 hours before the flight; with more than one airline on the trip you can't pay online.
