SWISS kitesurf equipment: fees, weight limits and how to pack

SWISS names kite surfboards on its sports baggage list as shortboards. If your fare includes a checked bag, the kite bag can go instead of a suitcase at no extra cost; otherwise you pay a flat rate per leg, at the airport.

SWISS will carry your kitesurf equipment and names the board directly: a (kite) surfboard counts as a shortboard, meaning 1 board up to 200cm. If your fare includes checked baggage, the kite bag can go instead of a suitcase at no extra cost. If you're also bringing a suitcase, or flying on the cheapest fare, you pay €80 per leg in Europe and €100 per leg to Egypt.

This is based on the SWISS website on 25 October 2026. SWISS publishes the rates in francs, euros, US and Canadian dollars, not in pounds, and you pay in the local currency of the departure airport.

The general side of flying with kite gear (packing, batteries, claims) is covered in flying with kite gear: airline fees and packing.

What a return trip costs

The rate is charged per leg. SWISS counts connections within 24 hours as one leg, so Prague - Zurich - destination with a connection under 24 hours is one leg out and one back, as long as SWISS operates both flights.

Situation Out + back = total
Kite bag only, up to 23kg, fare with checked bag (Economy Comfort, Flex) €0
Kite bag + suitcase, Europe €80 + €80 = €160
Kite bag + suitcase, Egypt €100 + €100 = €200
Kite bag on a Light fare, Europe €80 + €80 = €160

In francs, the Europe rate is CHF 90 and the Egypt rate CHF 115; in dollars, the Egypt rate is USD 120. You pay the return leg in the local currency of the departure airport, so from Egypt not necessarily in euros. The sports baggage page doesn't say which countries fall into the short-, medium- and long-haul intercontinental zones.

Light or Comfort?

Light or a higher fare: on Economy Light and Basic, SWISS doesn't carry sports baggage free, neither as additional baggage nor on top of a bag you've paid for. A first bag in Europe (€35-50 online) is limited to 23kg and 158cm in total dimensions; whether a kite bag could go in its place, we didn't find on the SWISS website on 25 October 2026, so check with the service centre first. Plan for the €80 per leg rate. I'd compare Light + €160 with the Comfort fare, where the kite bag travels as your checked bag.

What's different about SWISS

The board is listed, the kites aren't

SWISS names (kite) surfboards and talks about 1 board. Kites, bar and harness aren't on the list. The special rate only applies if the bag holds listed items; SWISS tolerates 1 unlisted item per bag and charges normal excess baggage rates if there are more. I'd describe the full contents of the bag in the form and wait for confirmation.

Register online, pay at the airport

You don't pay for sports baggage when you buy the ticket. You register it online, SWISS checks space and emails you. You pay at the service centre or at check-in. Carriage depends on hold space, so it isn't certain until it's confirmed.

SWISS-operated flights only

The form and the rates only apply to flights SWISS operates itself. On tickets with several airlines, the allowance follows the carrier of the most significant leg, usually the longest. Your e-ticket shows your allowance. If another airline, such as Lufthansa, operates one of the legs, read its sports baggage rules too.

Weight and length

A board longer than 200cm moves to the large category, €130 per leg in Europe. SWISS says the category assignment is final and doesn't change with weight. Sports baggage over 32kg or 3.5m isn't accepted.

Batteries and CO2 cartridges

  • Power banks: hand baggage only, never checked. You can't charge or use them on board.
  • Over 100Wh: batteries from 100 to 160Wh only with airline approval.
  • Vest with a CO2 cartridge: needs SWISS approval, registered via the contact form when you book.

Practical tips

Before paying for the ticket, check:

  1. Fare: does it include checked baggage? In Europe, from Economy Comfort upwards.
  2. Board length: up to 200cm is a shortboard; a longer one is in the large category (€130 per leg in Europe).
  3. Weight: up to 23kg in Economy, otherwise the rate applies.
  4. Who flies: the flight number and operator of every leg.

Allow extra time at the airport: SWISS wants sports baggage checked in 1 hour before the latest check-in time, and you pay the rate at the desk. How to pack a bag that survives the baggage handlers is in kite board bags and flying with your gear.

Where SWISS can take you kiting

swiss.com sells flights from Prague to Hurghada and to Cape Town; Prague - Zurich takes about 1h 25min. SWISS notes that some direct and connecting flights on swiss.com are operated by partner airlines. Your booking shows who operates each leg, and that decides which kite bag rules apply. The spots around Hurghada are in kitesurfing in Hurghada and El Gouna.

On the kite safari in Egypt I go on, there are pumps and a compressor on board and a twintip costs €60 for 6 days (2026 prices), so you can leave the board at home. The kite safari packing list covers what else to bring.

Questions

Does SWISS accept kitesurf equipment?

Yes. SWISS lists (kite) surfboards under shortboards: 1 board up to 200cm long. Register it with the online form at least 72 hours before departure; SWISS confirms by email, depending on hold space.

How much does SWISS charge for a kiteboard?

Nothing extra if the kite bag fits your fare's checked allowance. Otherwise the rate for normal sports equipment is €80 in Europe, €100 to Egypt and €150-250 on intercontinental routes, per leg (25 Oct 2026).

Can I take a kite bag instead of a suitcase on SWISS?

Yes, if your fare includes checked baggage and the kite bag stays within its number of pieces and weight, 23kg in Economy. It doesn't work on Economy Light, or on Economy Basic on short- and medium-haul flights: there, sports baggage can't travel free as additional baggage or on top of a bag you've paid for, so the sports equipment rate applies.

Do SWISS sports baggage rules apply on partner flights?

The sports baggage form and rates only apply to flights operated by SWISS. On tickets with several airlines, the allowance follows the carrier of the most significant leg under IATA rules; your e-ticket shows which applies.
