Lufthansa kitesurf equipment: fees, weight limits and how to pack

Lufthansa names kite surfboards on its sports baggage list and carries one instead of a suitcase if your fare includes checked baggage. On top of a suitcase, or on the cheapest fares, you pay a flat rate per route, at the airport.

Lufthansa will carry your kitesurf equipment and names the board directly: a (kite) surfboard counts as a shortboard, meaning 1 board up to 200cm long. If your fare includes checked baggage, it can go instead of a suitcase at no extra cost. If you're also bringing a suitcase, or flying on the cheapest fare, the flat rate is €80 per route in Europe and €100 per route to the Near and Middle East and North Africa.

This is based on Lufthansa's website on 25 October 2026. Lufthansa doesn't publish sports baggage fees in pounds, so prices are in euros. The general side of flying with kite gear (packing, batteries, claims) is covered in flying with kite gear: airline fees and packing.

What a return trip costs

The flat rate is charged per route. Lufthansa counts outbound and return as one route each, even with a connection in Frankfurt or Munich.

Situation Out + back = total
Kite bag only, up to 23kg, fare with checked bag (Economy Comfort, Flex) €0
Kite bag + suitcase, Europe €80 + €80 = €160
Kite bag + suitcase, Near and Middle East, North Africa €100 + €100 = €200
Kite bag on a Light fare, Europe €80 + €80 = €160

Lufthansa's sports baggage page doesn't say which countries fall into which region. The baggage calculator on its website shows the current price for your flight.

Light or Comfort?

Light or a higher fare: on Economy Light and Basic, sports baggage doesn't travel free, not even as a bag you've paid for. Adding a first checked bag in Europe costs €35-50 online, but the kite bag can't go in that allowance, so you pay the €80 flat rate per route. I'd compare Light + €160 with the Comfort fare, where the kite bag travels as your checked bag.

What's different about Lufthansa

The board is named, the kites aren't

Lufthansa lists (kite) surfboards under shortboards and talks about 1 board. It doesn't say outright that kites, bar and harness can go in the same bag. The form asks for the equipment's dimensions, so I'd note what's in the bag and wait for confirmation.

You pay at the airport

You don't pay for sports baggage online with Lufthansa. You register it online, Lufthansa checks space and emails you if it can't book it. You pay the flat rate at check-in. Carriage is only guaranteed once it's confirmed in your booking, because it depends on hold space.

Over your class limit

If the kite bag goes over both your allowance and your class's weight limit, but not 32kg, the sports flat rate applies. Equipment heavier than 32kg and longer than 315cm isn't accepted as baggage, only as air freight with Lufthansa Cargo.

Lufthansa Group and partner flights

Lufthansa says rules may differ on flights it doesn't operate itself. Even a flight sold on lufthansa.com may be flown by a partner airline. On trips with several airlines, the rules of the airline flying the most significant leg (usually the longest) under its own flight number apply. Your travel confirmation shows which allowance applies to you.

Airlines within the group have their own procedures too. Austrian Airlines wants sports baggage registered by phone or email and adds a ticket service fee of €10-20 depending on where you depart. More in Austrian Airlines kitesurf equipment.

Batteries and CO2 cartridges

Power banks go in the cabin only, 2 at most, up to 100Wh, and Lufthansa bans charging or using them on board. They don't go in the overhead locker. A life jacket with a CO2 cartridge needs airline approval in advance, with a maximum of 2 per passenger.

Practical tips

Before paying for the ticket, check:

  1. Fare: does it include checked baggage? In Europe, from Economy Comfort upwards.
  2. Bag length: up to 200cm is a shortboard; a longer bag is a long board, €130 in Europe.
  3. Weight: up to 23kg in Economy, otherwise the flat rate.
  4. Who flies: the flight number and operator of every leg.

Allow extra time at check-in. You pay the flat rate at the desk, and packaging can't be bought at the airport. How to pack a bag that survives the baggage handlers is in kite board bags and flying with your gear.

Where Lufthansa can take you kiting

Lufthansa sells Frankfurt - Hurghada flights on its website, once a week according to the route page. The spots nearby are in kitesurfing in Hurghada and El Gouna. On the kite safari in Egypt I go on, there are pumps and a compressor on board and a twintip costs €60 for 6 days (2026 prices), so you can leave the board at home. The kite safari packing list covers what else to bring.

Questions

Does Lufthansa accept kitesurf equipment?

Yes. Lufthansa lists (kite) surfboards under shortboards: 1 board up to 200cm long. Register it at least 72 hours before departure; carriage is only guaranteed once it is confirmed in your booking.

How much does Lufthansa charge for a kiteboard?

The shortboard flat rate is €80 in Europe, €100 on Near and Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia routes and €150-250 on intercontinental routes, per route. If the kite bag fits within your fare's checked allowance, there's no extra charge (25 Oct 2026).

Can I take a kite bag instead of a suitcase on Lufthansa?

Yes, if your fare includes checked baggage and the kite bag stays within its number of pieces and weight, 23kg in Economy. It doesn't work on Economy Light or on Economy Basic on short- and medium-haul flights, where you pay the sports baggage flat rate.

Do Lufthansa's rules apply on partner flights?

Not always. Lufthansa says rules may differ on flights it doesn't operate. On trips with several airlines, the rules of the airline flying the most significant leg, usually the longest, under its own flight number apply.
