Austrian Airlines kitesurf equipment: fees, weight limits and how to pack
Austrian Airlines carries a kite bag as sports baggage, free if your fare includes a checked bag. It doesn't name kitesurfing: a kiteboard counts as a short board up to 2m, and you have to register it by phone or email first.
Austrian Airlines carries kitesurf equipment as sports baggage. It doesn't name kites, but a kiteboard falls under short boards, which covers any sports board up to 200cm. If your fare includes a checked bag, the kite bag can go instead of a suitcase at no extra charge. As an extra piece it costs €80 per route in Europe and €100 per route to Egypt, plus a ticket service fee of €10-20.
This is based on Austrian's website on 25 October 2026. Austrian lists sports baggage fees in euros, Swiss francs, US and Canadian dollars, not pounds. The general side of flying with kite gear (packing, batteries, claims) is in flying with kite gear: airline fees and packing.

What a return trip costs
Austrian's fee table says routes between Europe and Egypt belong to the Near and Middle East, North Africa region. For Vienna - Hurghada it looks like this:
| Situation | Out + back = total |
|---|---|
| Kite bag only, up to 23kg, Comfort or Flex fare | €0 |
| Kite bag + suitcase, Egypt | €100 + €100 = €200 |
| Kite bag + suitcase, Europe | €80 + €80 = €160 |
Add the ticket service fee of €10-20 depending on where you depart. Austrian doesn't make clear whether it's charged per direction or per booking, or whether it also applies to gear carried within your allowance.
Fare first
Light fare: it doesn't include a checked bag. You can add a first bag in Europe for €35-50 online, but Austrian doesn't say whether a kite bag can use that allowance. I'd ask when registering the gear and compare the price with the Comfort fare, which includes 1 x 23kg.
What's different about Austrian Airlines
Kites aren't on the list
Austrian's short board category says any sports board up to 2 metres and doesn't mention kites or kiteboards. It also warns that items not listed, or with contents outside the category's definition, are charged as normal excess baggage. The definition doesn't mention kites, a bar or a harness in the bag. So when you register, I'd say exactly what's in the bag and get the category confirmed.
Register by phone or in writing
Austrian wants sports baggage registered in advance by phone or in writing through its baggage contact form, because space for sports equipment is limited. The page gives no fixed deadline in hours, only that carriage must be confirmed in advance.
Lufthansa Group and partner flights
Austrian's short board fees match Lufthansa's, but the process differs: Lufthansa has you register online at least 72 hours before departure. More in Lufthansa kitesurf equipment.
On trips with several airlines, the rules of the airline flying the most significant leg (usually the longest) under its own flight number apply. Some flights sold on austrian.com are operated by partners. Different rules may apply on Austrian holiday flights (charters). Their sports equipment page (myholiday.austrian.com) wasn't reachable on 25 October 2026, so on a package holiday I'd ask the tour operator directly.
Heathrow and long bags
Austrian no longer books bulky sports baggage to, from or via London Heathrow, including long boards and windsurfing equipment. A kite bag up to 200cm counts as a short board; if yours is longer, Heathrow is out.
Batteries and CO2 cartridges
Power banks go in the cabin only, 2 at most, up to 100Wh, and you can't charge or use them on board. A life jacket with a CO2 cartridge needs airline approval, with a maximum of 2 per passenger.
Practical tips
Before paying for the ticket:
- Fare: Comfort and Flex include a checked bag, Light doesn't.
- Bag length: up to 200cm is a short board at €80/100; longer is a long board at €130/175 (Europe/Egypt).
- Weight: 23kg per bag in Economy.
- Who flies: Austrian, a partner, or a charter.
How to pack a bag that survives the baggage handlers is in kite board bags and flying with your gear. What your policy should cover if the bag is damaged is in kitesurfing travel insurance: what to check.
Where Austrian can take you kiting
Austrian sells Vienna - Hurghada flights on its website, twice a week according to the route page. The spots nearby are in kitesurfing in Hurghada and El Gouna. On the kite safari in Egypt I go on, the transfer from Hurghada airport to the yacht is included, there are pumps and a compressor on board and a twintip costs €60 for 6 days (2026 prices), so you can leave the board at home.
Questions
Does Austrian Airlines accept kitesurf equipment?
Yes, as sports baggage. Austrian doesn't name kitesurfing, but a kiteboard fits the short board category, which covers any sports board up to 200cm. Register it in advance; carriage is only guaranteed once confirmed.
How much does Austrian Airlines charge for sports equipment?
Nothing extra if the kite bag fits your allowance's number of pieces and weight. Otherwise a short board costs €80 in Europe and €100 on routes to Egypt, Jordan and Israel, per route, plus a ticket service fee of €10-20 depending on where you depart (25 Oct 2026).
Can I take a kite as normal checked baggage on Austrian Airlines?
Yes. Austrian says you can replace your hold baggage with sports baggage as long as it stays within the number and weight allowed, 23kg per bag in Economy. It still has to be registered in advance.
Can I fly a kite bag via London Heathrow with Austrian?
A kite bag up to 200cm counts as a short board. Austrian no longer books bulky sports baggage, including long boards and windsurfing equipment, to, from or via Heathrow, so a bag longer than 2m won't work on that route.
