EgyptAir kitesurf equipment: fees, weight limits and how to pack
EgyptAir names kites and kiteboards on its sports equipment list. They don't count towards your free baggage allowance, so you pay for the kite bag even with a spare suitcase allowance on your ticket.
EgyptAir will carry your kitesurf equipment and lists Kite / Kite Board by name: checked baggage up to 32kg and 2m long. It is not included in your free baggage allowance, though, so you always pay for it. The fee is half the extra bag rate, which between Europe and Cairo comes to USD 75 per way at the airport.
This is based on EgyptAir's website on 25 October 2026. EgyptAir publishes its baggage prices in US dollars, so that's what I use here.
The general side of flying with kite gear, from packing to batteries and damage claims, is in flying with kite gear: airline fees and packing.

What a return trip costs
EgyptAir prices extra bags by where you fly from and to, and the kite bag costs half of that. The sports page doesn't say whether the half is taken from the airport rate or the lower website rate, so I've used the airport rate, which is the higher one.
| Route (airport rate) | Extra 23kg bag | Kite bag per way | Return |
|---|---|---|---|
| Europe - Cairo | USD 150 | USD 75 | USD 150 |
| Europe - 'Domestic' | USD 180 | USD 90 | USD 180 |
| Cairo - London, Frankfurt or Vienna (exception in the list) | USD 125 | USD 62.50 | USD 125 |
| 'Domestic' - London, Frankfurt or Vienna (exception in the list) | USD 155 | USD 77.50 | USD 155 |
The price list doesn't explain what 'Domestic' means. I read it as Egyptian airports other than Cairo: EgyptAir's allowance page lists 'Domestic Routes' separately from 'International Routes', and an extra bag from Cairo to 'Domestic' is USD 30. The page also doesn't say outright whether the Europe - 'Domestic' rate covers the whole way including a change in Cairo, so treat these totals as an estimate that assumes you pay once per way.
Online or through the call centre, an extra bag between Europe and Cairo is USD 135. But for flights departing Cairo, EgyptAir handles excess baggage only at the airport check-in counter. Ask EgyptAir's call centre whether the kite can be prepaid.
23kg and 158cm
The kite may weigh 32kg and be 2m long, but the extra bag price assumes a piece up to 23kg and 158cm in total dimensions, and adds a surcharge for 23-32kg or 158-203cm. The sports page doesn't say whether those surcharges apply to a kite bag. You can keep the weight under 23kg, but a bag for a 140cm board always adds up to more than 158cm, so ask the call centre straight away.
What's different about EgyptAir
The kite can't replace your suitcase
For most sports items, EgyptAir says they travel within the free allowance. For Kite / Kite Board it says the opposite: not included in the free baggage allowance. A spare piece on your ticket, even in Business, won't make the kite free.
2m and 32kg
The kite bag can be 2m and 32kg at most. Surfboards and windsurfs longer than 2m only travel as cargo with EgyptAir. That's plenty for a normal twintip: my kiteboard bag guide puts a 138cm board in a 140cm bag.
Space isn't guaranteed
EgyptAir accepts baggage over the allowance subject to space. The kite bag sits outside the allowance, so I'd expect the same for it. With excess baggage, EgyptAir wants you at the airport 90 minutes before your normal check-in time. Check-in closes 60 minutes before departure.
Power banks and CO2
- Power bank: carry-on only, one per passenger, with capacity and type printed on it. You can't use or charge it on board, and it never goes in checked baggage.
- Life vest CO2 cartridge: EgyptAir's restricted items list bans compressed gases, flammable or not, and doesn't mention an exception for life vest cartridges. I wouldn't pack a vest with a cartridge without written approval from EgyptAir.
Practical tips
- Weigh the bag at home and aim for 23kg, 32kg at most.
- Screenshot the price for your route and have it at the desk.
- Ask the call centre whether you can prepay the kite at the lower rate (departing Cairo, it's airport only).
- Arrive early: 90 minutes on top of normal check-in.
Photograph the bag before check-in in case it gets damaged. What to look for in a policy is in kitesurfing travel insurance.
Where EgyptAir can take you kiting
EgyptAir's baggage pages don't list routes as such. Its extra bag price list has separate lines for Cairo to Vienna, Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, Dusseldorf, London, Manchester and Budapest, among others, and a separate 'Domestic' line, which looks like Egyptian airports other than Cairo. Whether and how EgyptAir can get you to Hurghada or Marsa Alam, its flight search will show.
The spots around Hurghada are in kitesurfing in Hurghada and El Gouna, and the rest of the coast in kite spots in Egypt.
On the kite safari in Egypt I go on, there are pumps and a compressor on board and a twintip costs €60 for 6 days (2026 prices). You can leave the board at home and fly with a lighter bag. The kite safari packing list covers what else to bring.
Questions
Does EgyptAir accept kitesurf equipment?
Yes. EgyptAir's sports equipment list has a Kite / Kite Board item: checked baggage up to 32kg and 2m long, properly packed. It isn't included in the free baggage allowance.
How much does EgyptAir charge for a kite bag?
Half the extra bag rate for your route. Between Europe and Cairo an extra bag costs USD 150 at the airport, so a kite bag is USD 75 per way; to the price list's 'Domestic' line, which I read as Egyptian airports other than Cairo, USD 180, so USD 90 for the kite (EgyptAir website, 25 Oct 2026).
Can I take a kite bag instead of a suitcase on EgyptAir?
No. For Kite / Kite Board, EgyptAir says it isn't included in the free baggage allowance, so you pay for it even if you don't check a suitcase.
Do EgyptAir's rules apply on codeshare flights?
Not necessarily. EgyptAir says your allowance may differ on codeshare flights, and its excess baggage prices only apply on flights operated and marketed by EgyptAir.
