Ethiopian Airlines kitesurf equipment: fees, weight limits and how to pack
Ethiopian Airlines names kitesurf gear on its sports baggage list. As a second piece next to a single suitcase it flies free; otherwise the listed rate is USD 100.
Ethiopian Airlines will carry your kitesurf equipment and names it outright: its sports baggage table lists Kite surfboard, meaning a kite and a board, at USD 100. It flies free if you have only 1 suitcase, the kite bag is your 2nd piece, it measures up to 158cm and weighs no more than 32kg.
This is based on Ethiopian's English website and its PDF terms on 25 October 2026. Ethiopian quotes sports fees in US dollars. The general side of flying with kite gear (packing, claims) is covered in flying with kite gear: airline fees and packing.

When the kite bag flies free
Ethiopian says any sporting equipment flies free if:
- you carry only 1 checked bag and the equipment is your 2nd piece,
- the equipment's dimension is up to 158cm (62in),
- it weighs up to 32kg, even as the 2nd piece.
The third point is the interesting one. A normal Economy bag is limited to 23kg, but a kite bag as your 2nd piece can weigh 32kg. That leaves room for the board, several kites, the bar and your harness.
Length or total?
What a return trip costs
Prices from Ethiopian's website on 25 October 2026. For the USD 100 rate, the page doesn't say whether it's charged per flight or per one-way journey; the sales office will give you the exact amount.
| Situation | Cost |
|---|---|
| 1 suitcase + kite bag up to 32kg and 158cm | USD 0 |
| 2 suitcases + kite bag (kite bag over your allowance) | rate USD 100 |
| kite bag over 158cm, up to 280cm | not free, table rate USD 100 |
| if the USD 100 applies per direction | return USD 200 |
| if it applies per flight (e.g. connecting in Addis Ababa, 2 flights each way) | return USD 400 |
For comparison, Ethiopian's excess baggage rates list an extra bag up to 23kg at EUR 238 per piece to and from Europe (EUR 308 up to 32kg), and GBP 221 to and from London and Manchester. Sending the kite bag as sports equipment comes out cheaper than a third suitcase.
What's different about Ethiopian Airlines
Kitesurfing is named
The sports table lists Kite surfboard with the description "a kite, a board" at USD 100. Surf equipment (a board up to 280cm) and long boards (over 2m) are USD 200. I'd describe the kite bag as exactly that, a kite and a board, when you book, so it isn't classed as a surfboard.
You can't buy it online
According to Ethiopian's online extra baggage terms, sports equipment and musical instruments aren't covered by online purchases. They're handled through sales and ticket offices, the call centre or other Ethiopian offices. You also can't buy extra baggage online if another airline is part of your journey.
Payment and refunds
Ethiopian may collect the sports equipment charge in the local currency of the departure airport. The payment is non-refundable and can't be moved to another route or airline.
Longer gear and aircraft type
For equipment of 203-280cm, Ethiopian wants advance notice when you book. Before accepting sports equipment, the departure station checks the aircraft type for the whole journey. Equipment longer than 280cm only travels as cargo.
Partner flights
If a partner airline flies part of your trip, Ethiopian says different baggage rules may apply. The allowance in your booking confirmation is what counts. I couldn't find on Ethiopian's website on 25 October 2026 which sports equipment fee applies on a partner's flight; with a ticket like that, I'd ask the contact centre.
Batteries
- Power banks: 2 at most, each up to 160Wh, carry-on only. No charging them from the aircraft's power outlets, no using them to charge other devices on board, and not in the overhead bins.
- Spare lithium batteries up to 100Wh go in carry-on only; between 100 and 160Wh, 2 at most.
I couldn't find a rule on CO2 cartridges for life jackets on Ethiopian's website on 25 October 2026. If you travel with an inflatable vest, ask the contact centre in advance.
Practical tips
Before paying for the ticket, check:
- The allowance on your ticket: 2 pieces of 23kg or a weight system on your route.
- The kite bag's size: both length and total dimensions, and how Ethiopian reads the 158cm limit.
- How and where to pay: the USD 100 rate goes through an office or the contact centre, not online.
Keep the confirmation and the rules on your phone as screenshots. How to pack board, kites and bar so they survive the baggage handlers is in kite board bags and flying with your gear. What your policy should cover if the bag gets damaged is in kitesurfing travel insurance: what to check.
Where Ethiopian can take you kiting
Ethiopian sells Addis Ababa - Zanzibar flights on its website. The island's spots are in kitesurfing in Zanzibar.
On the kite safari in Egypt I go on, there are pumps and a compressor on board and a twintip costs €60 for 6 days (2026 prices), so you can leave the board at home. The kite safari packing list covers what else to bring.
Questions
Does Ethiopian Airlines accept kitesurf equipment?
Yes. Its sports equipment table lists Kite surfboard, meaning a kite and a board, at USD 100. It flies free if you have only 1 checked bag, the kite bag is the 2nd piece, it measures up to 158cm and weighs no more than 32kg.
How much does Ethiopian Airlines charge for a kiteboard?
The listed rate for a kite and board is USD 100 (25 Oct 2026). Ethiopian may collect it in the local currency of the departure airport and doesn't refund it. The page doesn't say whether it's charged per flight or per journey.
Can I add a kite bag online with Ethiopian?
Not as online extra baggage. Ethiopian's online extra baggage terms exclude sports equipment, which is handled through sales and ticket offices, the call centre or other Ethiopian offices.
Can I take a kite as normal checked baggage on Ethiopian?
As a 2nd piece next to one suitcase, yes, free of charge, if it measures up to 158cm and weighs up to 32kg. Economy normally includes 2 pieces of 23kg, but some routes use a weight system, so check the allowance on your ticket.
