Iberia kitesurf equipment: fees, weight limits and how to pack
Iberia names kites and kiteboards on its sports equipment list and carries them up to 23kg. The price depends on the zone: in Europe €55-73 (£45-64) online and €80-88 (£75-83) at the airport.
Iberia carries kitesurf equipment and names it directly: under Surf/Kite board/Wave board it accepts a kite and/or a board up to 3.5m long. On a European route (the Europe, Israel and North Africa zone) it costs €55-73 (£45-64) online and €80-88 (£75-83) at the airport. The weight allowance is 23kg.
The price chart has 3 zones and 2 price ranges, online and at the airport. Adding the bag with your ticket is cheapest; adding it at check-in or at the desk costs the most.
This is based on Iberia's website on 25 October 2026. The general side of flying with kite gear (packing, batteries, claims) is in flying with kite gear: airline fees and packing.

What a return trip costs
Iberia's sports price chart doesn't say "per direction" outright. It does say that if your flight connects different zones, the highest zone price applies. I'd budget for the fee each way and check the exact amount in your booking.
| Situation (return, 2 directions) | Online | Airport |
|---|---|---|
| Spain zone (mainland, Balearics, Canary Islands) | 2 x €40-53 = €80-106 | 2 x €70-77 = €140-154 |
| Europe, Israel, North Africa zone | 2 x €55-73 = €110-146 | 2 x €80-88 = €160-176 |
| America, Asia, Qatar zone | 2 x €130-172 = €260-344 | 2 x €170-187 = €340-374 |
The Canary Islands are in Iberia's Spain zone. If you fly from elsewhere in Europe via Madrid to the Canaries, the journey connects 2 zones and the Europe price applies.
0PC means no suitcase
Whether a suitcase is included depends on your fare: if your ticket says 0PC, it includes no hold baggage. You can add a 15, 23 or 32kg bag, and the booking shows the price. We couldn't download Iberia's allowance pages on 25 October 2026 (they returned a 404 error), so check which European fares include a bag on your actual ticket.
What's different about Iberia
Kite and board named, 1 set per person
Iberia's wording is a kite and/or a board up to 3.5m, so there's no need to argue that a kite counts as surf gear. It only accepts 1 set per passenger, though, and carriage depends on space in the hold.
Because kite bags usually can't go on the normal baggage belt, staff decide on special handling to the aircraft, and any cost is yours. Iberia explicitly asks you to arrive in good time.
23kg, excess paid at the airport
The weight allowance for sports equipment is 23kg. Above that you pay excess baggage up to 32kg, and you can only pay it at the airport. The Spanish version of the special baggage page gives an excess charge of €60 per piece between 23 and 32kg (with exceptions for Iberia Club members), while the English FAQ talks about a fixed cost per kilo. The website doesn't say whether the €60 applies to sports equipment, so I'd keep the bag under 23kg at home.
Air Nostrum, Vueling and partners
- Air Nostrum (YW), Iberia's regional flights: confirm space for oversized sports equipment with Customer Service in advance, or it may be refused at the airport. Payment is at the airport only.
- Vueling flights with an Iberia code: sports baggage costs €45 per flight. Vueling's own rules are in Vueling kitesurf equipment.
- Other airlines outside the Iberia Group (Iberia, Iberia Express, Air Nostrum): their own rules and allowances apply.
- Flights from London: bags longer than 190cm aren't permitted, and Heathrow doesn't accept cash payments.
Batteries and gas cartridges
- Power banks: up to 2, each up to 100Wh, cabin only, not to be used during the flight and never in the overhead lockers.
- Spare camera batteries: up to 4 up to 100Wh and 2 between 100 and 160Wh. More than 4 under 100Wh needs a form.
- Life jacket: Iberia lists it under water sports as an inflatable vest with a 60g CO2 bottle.
How to pack a bag that survives the baggage handlers is in kite board bags and flying with your gear.
Practical tips
- Weigh the bag at home. Keeping kites, bar and board to 23kg is doable if the harness and wetsuit go in your suitcase.
- Measure the length. The limit is 3.5m, but 190cm on flights from London.
- Don't wrap the bag in plastic or household film. Iberia counts soft plastic packaging and packaging for domestic use as odd-shaped luggage, which it may refuse or charge a separate fee for.
- Check the operator of every leg. For Air Nostrum, call Customer Service before you travel.
- Keep on your phone the payment confirmation for the sports item and a screenshot of the price chart.
Where Iberia can take you kiting
The Canary Islands are in Iberia's Spain zone, which has the lowest sports equipment fees. The island spots are in kitesurfing in the Canary Islands.
On the kite safari in Egypt I go on, there are pumps and a compressor on board and a twintip costs €60 for 6 days (2026 prices), so you can leave the board at home. The kite safari packing list covers what else to bring.
