Air France kitesurf equipment: fees, weight limits and how to pack

Air France names kite surfing and treats the gear as ordinary checked baggage. If it's your only checked bag on a fare that includes one, there's nothing extra to pay; a board longer than 107cm needs customer service approval first.

Air France will carry your kitesurf equipment and names kite surfing in its rules: the gear counts as checked baggage up to 23kg including packaging. If the kite bag is your only checked bag and your fare includes one, there's nothing extra to pay. That doesn't apply on Light and Basic fares.

The catch is board length. A board longer than 107cm (up to 300cm) needs customer service approval in advance, and the request has to go in at least 48 hours before departure.

This is based on Air France's UK website on 25 October 2026; its sports fees are listed in euros. The general side of flying with kite gear (packing, batteries, claims) is in flying with kite gear: airline fees and packing.

Air France kite gear in numbers

What Air France
Category checked baggage; kite surfing named
Fee as your only checked bag €0 (not Light or Basic); otherwise a specific rate the website doesn't show
US, Canada, Mexico 107-300cm board charged, €125 one way from Europe to the US
Weight 23kg including packaging; overweight up to 32kg for a fee at the airport
Size board up to 107cm without approval, 107-300cm with approval
Pieces your only checked bag (one of 2 in Business and La Première)
Notice for a board over 107cm, request at least 48 hours before departure
How to add request via customer service; US-route fees paid at the airport

What a return trip costs

Situation Out + back = total
Kite bag only, up to 23kg, fare with a checked bag €0
Kite bag + suitcase not published by Air France, ask customer service
107-300cm board, Europe - US €125 + USD 150 (total depends on the exchange rate)

The fee on US routes is per one-way flight and from the US it's charged in dollars (USD 150), from Europe in euros. You pay it at the airport.

Suitcase or kite bag?

Kite bag + suitcase: Air France doesn't sell its Additional Baggage Option for sports equipment. It says sports gear has a specific rate but doesn't show it on the website as of 25 October 2026. I'd ask for the price in the board approval request you're sending anyway.

What's different about Air France

A kite bag instead of a suitcase, not next to it

Outside flights to the US, Canada and Mexico, Air France doesn't list a set fee for a kite bag. It treats it as ordinary checked baggage, free only when it's the only one. With a kite bag and a suitcase, sports equipment falls under a specific rate the website doesn't show. So I'd try to fit kites, bar, harness and clothes into one kite bag, as long as it stays within 23kg.

Board length and approval

The 107cm limit is about the board. Measure it in its bag: if it's longer, you need prior customer service approval, at least 48 hours before departure. Bags whose height, length and width add up to between 158 and 300cm are dropped at the Oversized baggage counter. Above 300cm, Air France points you to Air France Cargo.

KLM and partner flights

The board fees on US, Canada and Mexico routes apply on flights operated by Air France and KLM. How KLM handles kite bags on other routes is in KLM kitesurf equipment.

Air France rules apply when you fly with an AF flight number. On connections, the first flight that changes continent decides: if it has an AF number, Air France rules apply all the way. For partner flights, Air France points you to the partner's website. If the allowance differs between legs, it recommends following the strictest rules.

Batteries and CO2 cartridges

Power banks can't go in checked baggage; in the cabin they stay with you, not in the overhead bin, and you can't charge or use them on board. A self-inflating life vest with a CO2 cartridge needs prior approval, with a maximum of 2 per person.

Practical tips

Before paying for the ticket:

  1. Fare: does it include a checked bag? Light and Basic don't carry a kite bag free.
  2. Board length in its bag: over 107cm means an approval request.
  3. Weight including packaging: up to 23kg.
  4. Route: via the US, Canada or Mexico, a longer board costs extra.

Don't wrap the bag in stretch film or a soft plastic bag: Air France doesn't accept that packaging and will refuse a visibly damaged bag. How to pack a bag that survives the baggage handlers is in kite board bags and flying with your gear.

Where Air France can take you kiting

Air France sells Paris - Zanzibar flights on its website. The spots and season are in kitesurfing in Zanzibar. On the kite safari in Egypt I go on, there are pumps and a compressor on board and a twintip costs €60 for 6 days (2026 prices), so you don't need to worry about a board over 107cm.

Questions

Does Air France accept kitesurf equipment?

Yes. Air France lists kite surfing equipment by name and treats it as checked baggage up to 23kg including packaging. A board longer than 107cm (up to 300cm) needs prior approval from customer service, requested at least 48 hours before departure.

How much does Air France charge for a kiteboard?

Nothing extra if the kite bag is your only checked bag and your fare includes checked baggage (not Light or Basic). On flights to, from or via the US, Canada and Mexico, a 107-300cm board costs extra by zone, €125 one way from Europe to the US. Air France doesn't publish a price for other cases (25 Oct 2026).

Can I take a kite as normal checked baggage on Air France?

Yes, that's exactly how Air France treats it: as checked baggage, free if it's your only checked bag (or one of 2 in Business and La Première). The Additional Baggage Option can't be bought for sports equipment, which Air France says has a specific rate.

Do Air France rules apply on KLM and partner flights?

The board fees for the US, Canada and Mexico apply on flights operated by Air France and KLM. For partner flights, Air France points you to the partner's website and recommends following the strictest rules when allowances differ between legs.
