KLM kitesurf equipment: fees, weight limits and how to pack
KLM names kitesurfing explicitly: a board and kite in a kite bag travel instead of 1 checked bag, within your fare's weight allowance. Bags longer than 107cm need a reservation.
KLM names kitesurfing equipment explicitly: a board and a kite in a kite bag travel instead of 1 item of checked baggage. So your fare's weight allowance applies, 23kg in Economy and 32kg in Business. KLM only mentions a possible extra fee for kite gear on flights to or from Canada, Mexico and the US. Economy Basic and Light fares don't include a checked bag, though, so you'll need to buy one.
These rules and prices come from KLM's website on 25 October 2026.

A kite bag instead of a suitcase: what it means
KLM counts the kite bag as 1 item of checked baggage. Economy Standard and Flex include 1 bag up to 23kg, Premium Comfort Standard and Flex 2 bags of 23kg, Business Standard and Flex 2 bags of 32kg, and Business Light 1 bag up to 32kg. On some routes you can bring 1 additional checked bag on top of the regular allowance; My Trip shows your exact allowance.
For golf gear, KLM says explicitly that with Basic or Light you buy 1 checked bag. The kitesurfing section doesn't repeat it. But since the kite bag travels in place of a checked bag, I'd plan on buying 1 with Basic or Light.
Reserve over 107cm
A twintip kite bag is usually longer than 107cm, so expect to need a reservation. KLM asks you to get in touch after booking if you're travelling with sports gear, and it will check your options. For items not mentioned on its page, it suggests contacting your travel agency or the KLM Customer Contact Centre.
What a return trip costs
KLM gives extra bag prices as ranges; My Trip shows the exact amount. The page doesn't say whether a range is per flight or per trip.
| Fare and option | What you pay extra |
|---|---|
| Economy Standard or Flex, kite bag up to 23kg instead of a suitcase | KLM states no sports fee, except to or from the US, Canada and Mexico |
| Economy Light or Basic, kite bag | bought bag: Europe €20-70, intercontinental €30-240 |
| Economy Standard, kite bag plus a suitcase | second bag: Europe €20-70, intercontinental €30-240 |
| Kite bag of 23-32kg in Economy | overweight: Europe €75-100, intercontinental €100-300 |
| Business Standard or Flex | 2 bags of 32kg included |
The extra bag prices apply when you buy at least 24 hours before departure. KLM says you'll often pay more later in My Trip, and at the airport too.
What's different about KLM
Flying Blue
Flying Blue Ultimate and Platinum members get 2 extra checked bags free on KLM and Air France flights, Gold and Silver 1 bag. That lets a kite bag fly next to your suitcase without buying anything.
Flights to the US, Canada and Mexico
Here KLM warns that kite gear may carry an extra fee. It doesn't give an amount, so you'll find out when you reserve the bag.
Partner flights and connections
We couldn't find on the sports baggage page (25 October 2026) whose rules apply when another airline flies part of your trip under a KLM flight number. Ask when you reserve the kite bag, especially for trips with a connection.
Batteries
- Power banks count as spare batteries at KLM, and you can bring max 2. Keep them on you, not in the overhead bin, and don't use or charge them on board.
- Spare batteries: up to 20, hand baggage only. Each in its original packaging, or with the contacts taped and in its own plastic bag.
- 100-160Wh only with KLM's permission, over 160Wh never.
- CO2 life jacket cartridges weren't on KLM's restricted items pages on 25 October 2026. Check with KLM before you fly.
Practical tips
- Weigh the bag at home. In Economy, anything over 23kg pays the overweight fee, and a wet wetsuit adds weight on the way home.
- Measure the bag's length, and if it's over 107cm, contact KLM right after booking.
- Photograph the bag and its contents before check-in and keep the reservation confirmation on your phone. How to choose and pack a bag is in kite board bags and flying with your gear, and where to take it long-haul is in the best kitesurf spots in the world.
On the kite safari in Egypt I go on, there are pumps and a compressor on board and you can rent a twintip for €60 for 6 days (2026 prices). If you leave the board at home and your kites, bar and harness fit in a suitcase, you don't need a kite bag at all. The kite safari packing list covers the rest.
Questions
Does KLM accept kitesurf equipment?
Yes. KLM lists kitesurfing equipment, meaning a board and a kite packed in a kite bag, and carries it instead of 1 item of checked baggage. You need a reservation if the bag is longer than 107cm, and KLM can't carry bags longer than 300cm.
Does KLM charge for a kite bag?
If your fare includes a checked bag (Economy Standard or Flex: 1 bag up to 23kg), the kite bag replaces it. KLM only mentions a possible extra fee for kite gear on flights to or from Canada, Mexico and the US. With Basic or Light you need to buy a checked bag: €20-70 per item within Europe if bought at least 24 hours before departure.
Can I take a kite bag and a suitcase on KLM?
Yes, you buy the suitcase as an extra checked bag. KLM says an extra bag up to 23kg costs €20-70 on flights within Europe and €30-240 on intercontinental flights when bought at least 24 hours before departure. My Trip shows the exact price.
What if my kite bag weighs more than 23kg on KLM?
The limit is 23kg per bag in Economy and Premium Comfort, 32kg in Business. KLM charges €75-100 within Europe and €100-300 on intercontinental flights for bags over 23kg. Over 32kg, it won't carry it as baggage.
