Volotea kitesurf equipment: fees, weight limits and how to pack

Volotea carries kitesurf equipment as special baggage, but kites aren't on its list. It names surfboards, snowboards, windsurf boards, golf bags and bikes. Special baggage can weigh up to 32kg and measure up to 2 metres. The fee table puts it at €60 online and €80 at the airport; the conditions of carriage charge it per flight.

What a return trip costs

Volotea's fee table says charges are per passenger and journey. Its conditions of carriage, though, say checked luggage is charged a fee per flight from that table, and spell out the same for the sports equipment fee on firearms. A flight there means origin to destination with no scheduled stopover. On a direct return trip you pay twice; with a connection, it would be per flight.

Volotea says suitcase prices vary by route and season. The Standard fare has no checked bag, only a small under-seat bag. Bags come in 10, 20 or 25kg, up to 5 pieces and 50kg per passenger. A 20kg bag costs from €75 at airport check-in, less online.

What's different about Volotea

Kites aren't on the list

Volotea's special baggage list names surfboards and windsurf boards, not kites. A kite bag with a board and kites looks most like surf gear, but that's my reading, not Volotea's rule. In the chat, say what's in the bag, its size and weight, and save the answer as a screenshot.

The 2 metre and 32kg cap

Special baggage can measure up to 2 metres. Measure the bag with padding and pockets, especially if it holds a longer board. 32kg is the maximum for special baggage.

€20 less per flight online

There's a €20 difference per flight between the website (€60) and the airport (€80). You can add special baggage online any time after booking, up to 2 hours before departure.

Flight changes and codeshares

If you change flights with the Flex Plan add-on, Volotea moves the sports equipment automatically with the booking. On flights operated for Volotea by another airline (codeshare), the operating airline's conditions apply. And if you buy two Volotea flights separately, each is a separate contract, and it's up to you to allow time to re-check your bag.

Batteries

Power banks and spare batteries up to 100Wh: a maximum of 2 per person, hand baggage only. Terminals must be taped and each battery in its own bag or original packaging. Between 100 and 160Wh you need Volotea's approval. The general IATA rules are in flying with kite gear.

Practical tips

1. Weigh and measure the packed bag, keeping to 2 metres and 32kg.
2. Confirm via chat that they'll take the kite bag, and save the answer.
3. Add the special baggage online and save €20 per flight.
4. Weigh the bag before the flight home too. A wet wetsuit and sand add weight.
5. At check-in, have the payment confirmation and the chat screenshot on your phone.

Where Volotea can take you kiting
