Eurowings kitesurf equipment: fees, weight limits and how to pack

Eurowings takes sports baggage up to 32kg from €50 depending on the route, but kitesurfing isn't among its examples. Book it early, because space on the plane is limited.

Eurowings carries sports baggage up to 32kg per item and lists surfboards among the examples that cost from €50 (£44). It doesn't name kitesurfing, kiteboards or kite bags. The exact price depends on your route and shows up when you book; adding it later at the airport counter may cost more.

Everything below comes from the Eurowings website on 25 October 2026.

For how other airlines compare, see kitesurf equipment on flights: airline fees.

Kitesurfing isn't listed: what to check

Eurowings' sports examples are bicycles, golf, diving gear, skis and surfboards. Bodyboards and surfboards, it says, just need a protective bag. A kite bag with a board is closest to a surfboard, but that's my reading.

During online booking there's an "Other Sports Equipment" option under the Services tab; Eurowings mentions it for musical instruments. I'd describe the bag's contents, dimensions and weight to the call centre and ask which option to choose. I'd also note down the agent's name and the time of the call.

Book it with the ticket

You can book sports baggage online until web check-in closes, through the call centre or at the airport counter. But Eurowings says space on the plane is limited, and if it runs out, your sports baggage can't travel. That's why I'd add it straight away with the ticket.

What a return trip costs

Eurowings gives "from" prices; your booking shows the exact amount. The website doesn't say whether sports baggage is charged per flight.

Option What's known
Kite bag as sports baggage from €50 (£44); if charged per flight, a return trip is from €100 (£88)
BASIC fare, kite bag plus a suitcase up to 23kg from €50 for the kite bag + suitcase from €18 (£16) depending on route
SMART fare, kite bag plus a suitcase the 23kg suitcase is included, kite bag from €50
With a Eurowings credit card sports baggage €0

Eurowings says bags added online or via the call centre up to 2 hours before departure cost up to 50% less than at the airport. Excess baggage at the airport costs €15 (£13) per extra piece and per kilo.

What's different about Eurowings

The Eurowings credit card

Sports baggage travels free for Eurowings credit card holders and their travelling companions. There are 2 conditions: you book it online, with the flight or later, and you pay for the flight and any later booking with the same Eurowings credit card.

Over 32kg

If your kite bag goes over 32kg, Eurowings charges the normal price for an extra suitcase if the excess fits within 23kg, or you book another sports item. A bag you've already booked can't be upgraded to a higher weight; you can only add another one.

Flights run by other airlines

Eurowings rules apply to flights with an EW flight number, even when another airline operates them. The exception is codeshare flights numbered EW3010 to EW3349, such as those with Smartwings or Aegean; which rules apply to them instead, we couldn't find on the Eurowings website (25 October 2026), so ask when you book. On partner flights without an EW number (Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines and others), that airline's rules apply. Smartwings names kite gear explicitly, see the airline comparison.

Batteries and life jacket cartridges

  • Power banks: since 15 January 2026, max 2 per person, hand baggage only, kept on you or under the seat, not in the overhead bin. You can't charge or use them on board.
  • Over 100Wh up to 160Wh, power banks and batteries need airline approval; Eurowings asks you to register them at [email protected].
  • Spare batteries go in hand baggage only, each with insulated terminals.
  • A life jacket with a gas cartridge needs the airline's permission.

Practical tips

  • Weigh the bag at home. The limit is 32kg per item, and a wet wetsuit adds weight on the way home.
  • Watch the flight number if you book through a partner or a travel agency. Eurowings says to check with that airline or agency, as baggage rules may differ.
  • Pad the board with your wetsuit and a towel. How to choose and pack a bag is in kite board bags and flying with your gear.

Eurowings shows flight offers to Hurghada on its website, for example from Düsseldorf and Prague. The spots around Hurghada are in kitesurfing in Hurghada and El Gouna. On the kite safari in Egypt I go on, there are pumps and a compressor on board and you can rent a twintip for €60 for 6 days (2026 prices), so you can leave your board at home.

Questions

Can I take kitesurf equipment on Eurowings?

Eurowings carries sports baggage up to 32kg and names surfboards among its examples, but it doesn't mention kitesurfing. A protective bag is enough for surfboards. Before buying the ticket, I'd ask the call centre which item to book your kite bag as.

How much does Eurowings charge for sports equipment?

According to Eurowings on 25 October 2026, sports equipment such as bicycles or surfboards costs from €50 (£44), and skis and snowboards from €30 (£26). The exact price depends on the route, and booking later at the airport counter may cost more.

When is sports baggage free on Eurowings?

With a Eurowings credit card: sports baggage is free for cardholders and their travelling companions if it's booked online and the flight, plus any later booking, is paid with the same Eurowings credit card.

What if my kite bag weighs more than 32kg on Eurowings?

Eurowings says you then pay the normal price for an extra suitcase if the excess fits within 23kg, or you book another sports item for up to 32kg more.
