Kenya Airways kitesurf equipment: fees, weight limits and how to pack
Kenya Airways names kites in its surf equipment rules and generally counts sports gear as a standard piece of checked baggage. A bag longer than 107cm needs clearance in advance.
Kenya Airways will carry your kitesurf equipment and names it outright: surf equipment can be 1 board plus a mast, a sail or a kite. Sports gear generally counts as a standard piece of checked baggage, so it comes out of your allowance. A kite bag longer than 107cm, though, is special baggage and needs clearance in advance.
This is based on Kenya Airways' English website on 25 October 2026. The general side of flying with kite gear (packing, claims) is covered in flying with kite gear: airline fees and packing.

Your kite bag as a standard piece
Kenya Airways says sports equipment is generally a standard piece of baggage, with a maximum sum of dimensions of 300cm and the weight limit of your travel class. For surf equipment, which explicitly includes kiteboards, it adds:
- up to 107cm long, it's accepted without clearance as a standard piece,
- longer than 107cm, it's special baggage and needs advance clearance,
- over 32kg or 300cm, it isn't accepted as baggage, only as cargo,
- it must be packed in a suitable cover you provide.
Measure your packed bag. If it's over 107cm with the board in it, plan on getting clearance in advance.
Clearance goes in the booking
Kenya Airways says odd-size baggage depends on the capacity of each aircraft. If the bag can't fit on one of the aircraft on your routing, it can't be accepted for the whole route. At check-in, the agent looks for the clearance in your booking.
What a return trip costs
This is where Kenya Airways' website is least clear. Its rate table lists surf equipment at:
| Route | Surf Equipment |
|---|---|
| Africa - Europe and America | 110 |
| Africa - Middle East and Asia | 90 |
| within Africa | 50 |
| domestic (Kenya) | 40 |
The table doesn't give a currency or say whether it's per flight or per direction. Kenya Airways does state the currency for other fees (USD for name changes, for example), but not for sports equipment rates, so don't read the table as amounts in any particular currency. For surf equipment it doesn't say when the rate applies. For golf, it says a charge applies when the free allowance is exceeded per route and is doubled for a round trip; for skis, when the gear exceeds the weight limit or the free allowance.
| Situation (Economy, Africa - Europe) | What we know |
|---|---|
| kite bag only, up to 23kg | fits the 2 x 23kg allowance |
| kite bag + 1 suitcase, each up to 23kg | still 2 pieces of your allowance |
| kite bag + 2 suitcases | kite bag is over the allowance; the table lists 110 with no currency, and the site doesn't say whether that rate is what you'd pay |
| if the 110 rate applied per direction | return 2 x 110, currency not stated |
I'd ask for the exact price when requesting clearance.
What's different about Kenya Airways
Kites are named under surf
Kenya Airways is one of the airlines that names kites outright: surf equipment can be 1 board plus a mast, a sail or a kite, and the category covers wind, wave, kite, boogie and body boards. You won't need to argue about which category your bag belongs in.
Domestic flights have a smaller allowance
On domestic routes (Mombasa, Malindi, Kisumu), Economy includes just 1 piece of 23kg. If you fly Nairobi - Mombasa on a separate ticket with a kite bag and a suitcase, they won't both fit in the allowance. The domestic surf rate in the table is 40.
Partners and codeshares
Flights operated by other airlines under a Kenya Airways flight number may have different restrictions. When several airlines are on one ticket, the allowance follows IATA Resolution 302, and the one shown on your ticket or in the check-in system applies.
Batteries and gas cartridges
- Power banks and spare batteries go in carry-on only, each protected against short circuits.
- Kenya Airways lists compressed gases (flammable and non-flammable) as prohibited in both carry-on and checked baggage. I couldn't find an exception for CO2 cartridges in life jackets on its website on 25 October 2026, so I'd ask before travelling or leave the inflatable vest at home.
Practical tips
- Measure and weigh the packed bag: length and kilos (Economy limit 23kg per piece).
- Request clearance if the bag is longer than 107cm.
- Ask about the price and currency if the kite bag will be over your allowance.
- Check any domestic connection separately: only 1 piece.
In Economy on flights to and from the EU, US and UK, your carry-on plus accessory can weigh 12kg in total, on other routes 10kg. How to pack board, kites and bar so they survive the baggage handlers is in kite board bags and flying with your gear. What to look for in a policy is in kitesurfing travel insurance: what to check.
Where Kenya Airways can take you kiting
Kenya Airways sells flights to Zanzibar from Nairobi and Mombasa, and its Zanzibar page says Paje is great for kitesurfing. More on the spots in kitesurfing in Zanzibar. Kenya Airways also flies direct from Nairobi to Mombasa, in about an hour.
On the kite safari in Egypt I go on, there are pumps and a compressor on board and a twintip costs €60 for 6 days (2026 prices), so you can leave the board at home. The kite safari packing list covers what else to bring.
Questions
Does Kenya Airways accept kitesurf equipment?
Yes. Kenya Airways says surf equipment can consist of 1 board and a mast, a sail or a kite, and explicitly includes kiteboards. Up to 107cm long it's accepted without clearance as a standard piece of baggage; longer bags need advance clearance.
How much does Kenya Airways charge for a surfboard or kite bag?
Its rate table lists surf equipment at 110 for Africa to Europe and America, 50 within Africa and 40 on domestic flights. On 25 Oct 2026 the table didn't state the currency or when and per what the rate applies, so confirm the price when you request clearance.
Can I take a kite as normal checked baggage on Kenya Airways?
Generally yes: Kenya Airways treats sports equipment as a standard piece of baggage. Economy between Africa and Europe includes 2 pieces of 23kg, so the kite bag can be one of them. If it's longer than 107cm, get clearance in advance.
What's the Kenya Airways baggage allowance on domestic flights?
Economy on domestic routes (Mombasa, Malindi, Kisumu) includes 1 piece of 23kg, compared with 2 pieces on international routes. A kite bag plus a suitcase won't both fit on a separate domestic ticket.
