On 25 October 2026 Finnair doesn't mention kites or kiteboards in its baggage rules. The closest it gets is surfboards: up to 210cm and 23kg, they travel as special baggage for the price of an extra checked bag, which in Europe outside the Nordics and Baltics is €32-55 or €50-70 each way prepaid online, depending on whether it's your first or second bag. Kite bag or kites in a suitcase
Finnair treats sports equipment as a standard bag if it weighs up to 23kg and fits within 90 x 75 x 45cm. You don't need to tell Finnair about it as long as it's within your allowance. A twintip bag is usually longer, which makes it special baggage: not part of your allowance and charged separately.
Chat first, then pay
For a bag with a board, here's how I'd go about it:
- Weigh and measure the packed bag: length, width, height and kilos.
- Message the Finnair chat with the contents: kiteboard, number of kites, bar, harness, size and weight. Ask whether you can add it as a surfboard.
- Allow time. Finnair says special service requests can take up to a week.
- Pay online in Manage booking if every flight is operated and marketed by Finnair. Otherwise you pay via the chat or at the airport.
- Save the reply and have it on your phone at check-in.
What a return trip costs
These prices apply to journeys within Europe outside the Nordics and Baltics, per direction. The website doesn't break down the exact price within each range; Finnair says extra baggage prices depend on when you bought your ticket.
| Situation | Return |
|---|---|
| Kites, bar and harness in a suitcase on Classic or Flex (1 x 23kg) | €0 extra |
| Kite bag as a surfboard, fare without a suitcase (Economy Superlight), prepaid | 2 x €32-55 = €64-110 |
| Kite bag as a surfboard as your 2nd bag (suitcase in the fare or bought), prepaid | 2 x €50-70 = €100-140 |
| The same, paid at the airport | 2 x €90 = €180 |
| Board bag over 210 x 60 x 40cm | 2 x €150 = €300 |
A bag of 23-32kg costs €65-100 prepaid or €65 at the airport each way in Europe; heavy and oversized together is €130 at the airport. If you go over the number of bags on your ticket, that airport charge comes on top of the extra bag fee.
What's different about Finnair
Special baggage isn't part of your allowance
Finnair says special baggage isn't part of the baggage allowance and is paid separately. The suitcase in a Classic fare won't cover a board bag. Only kites packed in a standard-size bag travel without a fee.
Compensation covers sports items only
If sports equipment carried as special baggage is delayed or damaged, Finnair only compensates the sports equipment and sport-related items in the bag. I'd keep clothes and everything else in the suitcase.
Snowkiting: skis and snowboards
Finnair counts skis or a board, poles, boots and a helmet in one bag as 1 piece of special baggage. It's always charged separately at the extra bag price, plus a heavy bag charge over 23kg. Finnair doesn't list kites as ski bag contents, so I'd pack them in a suitcase or ask in the chat. Skis longer than 220cm are oversized and need approval in advance.
Batteries and CO2 cartridges
- Power banks: 2 per person at most, up to 100Wh, carry-on only; you can't use or charge them during the flight.
- Spare batteries of 100-160Wh: 2 at most, only with Finnair's approval; protect the terminals against short circuits.
- Life jacket with CO2: up to 2 cylinders fitted and 2 spares, with Finnair's approval in advance.
Practical tips
- Buy in advance. Extra bags can be prepaid up to 50 minutes before departure, and online is cheaper than at the airport.
- Mind the date. Finnair's extra baggage prices depend on when you bought your ticket.
- Photograph the bag and contents. What your policy should cover is in travel insurance for kitesurfing.
- Packing: fins off the board, kites deflated, bar wrapped. More in kite board bags and flying with your gear.
On the kite safari in Egypt I go on, there are pumps and a compressor on board and a twintip costs €60 for 6 days (2026 prices), so you can leave the board at home and fit kites and bar in a suitcase. The kite safari packing list covers what else to bring.
