Brussels Airlines kitesurf equipment: fees, weight limits and how to pack

Brussels Airlines doesn't name kitesurfing, but a board up to 200cm counts as a short board. If your fare includes checked baggage, the kite bag can replace your suitcase at no extra cost; otherwise you pay a flat rate per direction.

Brussels Airlines will carry your kitesurf equipment, but kitesurfing isn't named on its list. A board up to 200cm long falls under short boards. If your fare includes checked baggage, the kite bag can go instead of your suitcase at no extra cost. Otherwise there's a flat rate per direction: €80 within Europe, €100 to Egypt and Morocco.

This is based on Brussels Airlines' English website on 25 October 2026, with prices in euros. Brussels Airlines is part of the Lufthansa Group. The general side of flying with kite gear (packing, claims) is covered in flying with kite gear: airline fees and packing.

What a return trip costs

Sports equipment fees only apply on flights operated by Brussels Airlines. One-way prices from its website on 25 October 2026:

Where short board (up to 200cm) long board (up to 315cm)
within Europe (Tenerife) €80 €130
Egypt, Israel, Morocco (Hurghada) €100 €175
Senegal and other West African countries (Dakar) €150 €250
intra Africa €70 €110

An example for Hurghada, which Brussels Airlines flies to direct from Brussels:

Situation, Hurghada Out + back = total
kite bag only up to 23kg and 200cm, Economy Comfort or Flex €0
kite bag + suitcase, short board €100 + €100 = €200
kite bag on a Light fare, short board €100 + €100 = €200
bag longer than 200cm (long board) €175 + €175 = €350

I couldn't find a rate for Tanzania (Zanzibar) in the table; the Service Centre will give you the price.

Light or Comfort?

Light or a higher fare: on Economy Light and Basic, sports equipment doesn't fly free. You can add a discounted first checked bag to Light (in Europe €35-50 online, €65 at check-in, per direction), but sports gear doesn't fall within that allowance. I'd compare Light + €200 for a kite bag to Egypt and back with the Comfort fare, where the kite bag can replace your suitcase.

What's different about Brussels Airlines

Kites aren't named

You won't find kites or kitesurfing on Brussels Airlines' sports equipment list. The closest category is short boards: 1 board that can be used for different sports, up to 200cm long. Lufthansa, in the same group, names the (kite) surfboard in its shortboard category, see Lufthansa kitesurf equipment. With Brussels Airlines, I'd get the category confirmed when you register the gear.

Register through the Service Centre

Brussels Airlines says you should always contact its Service Centre as soon as possible with sports equipment, as storage space on your flight may be limited. The page doesn't mention an online form or a deadline in hours.

Skis fly free, kites don't

Brussels Airlines carries skis and snowboards free on top of your allowance (except on Basic and Light fares and flights to the USA, Mexico and Central America). That exception doesn't cover kite gear: it either fits your allowance or you pay the flat rate.

Partner flights

On flights operated by a codeshare partner, the partner's rules and fees may apply. Brussels Airlines itself notes that some of the direct and connecting flights it sells are operated by partner airlines, so check who actually operates your flight when you book. If several airlines are on your ticket, the most significant carrier rule applies. When connecting to a partner's flight, you may need to collect your bag and check it in again.

Batteries and life jacket cartridges

  • Power banks: carry-on only, 2 at most, up to 100Wh; 100-160Wh only with approval. No charging or using them on board, and not in the overhead locker.
  • Spare lithium batteries: up to 100Wh, 20 at most; 100-160Wh, 2 at most with approval.
  • Life jacket with CO2: needs airline approval, with up to 2 cartridges in the vest and 2 spares; register through the Dangerous Goods Department when booking.

Practical tips

  1. Fare: does it include checked baggage? Basic and Light don't.
  2. Bag length: up to 200cm is a short board, over 200cm a long board.
  3. Who flies: on codeshare flights the partner's fees apply.
  4. Service Centre: register the gear as soon as you've bought the ticket and save the confirmation.

How to pack board, kites and bar so they survive the baggage handlers is in kite board bags and flying with your gear. What to look for in a policy is in kitesurfing travel insurance: what to check.

Where Brussels Airlines can take you kiting

According to its website, Brussels Airlines flies from Brussels direct to Hurghada (5 flights a week), Tenerife (7 a week) and Dakar (7 a week), and also sells flights to Zanzibar. The spots around Hurghada are in kitesurfing in Hurghada and El Gouna.

The kite safari in Egypt I go on starts in Hurghada. There are pumps and a compressor on board and a twintip costs €60 for 6 days (2026 prices), so you can leave the board at home. The kite safari packing list covers what else to bring.

Questions

Does Brussels Airlines accept kitesurf equipment?

Kitesurfing isn't named on its sports equipment list. A board up to 200cm long counts as a short board (1 board for different sports), and up to 315cm as a long board. Contact the Service Centre as soon as possible, as space is limited.

How much does Brussels Airlines charge for a kiteboard?

A short board costs €80 one-way within Europe, €100 to Egypt, Israel and Morocco and €150 to Senegal and other West African countries. A long board is €130 in Europe and €175 to Egypt (25 Oct 2026). If the kite bag fits your fare's allowance, there's no charge.

Can I take a kite bag instead of a suitcase on Brussels Airlines?

Yes, if your fare includes checked baggage and the kite bag stays within its number of pieces and weight: 1 piece up to 23kg in Economy Comfort and Flex. It doesn't apply to long boards, Economy Light or Economy Basic on short- and medium-haul flights.

How much is kite gear on Brussels Airlines to Hurghada?

A short board up to 200cm is €100 one-way to Egypt, €200 return. A long board is €175 one-way. On Economy Comfort or Flex with a kite bag up to 23kg instead of a suitcase, you pay nothing.
