SunExpress will carry your kitesurf equipment and names kiteboards in its all boards category (sail-, surf-, kite- and other boards). On international flights it costs from €44.99 prepaid and from €70 at the airport, per one-way trip, with up to 30kg included. To Hurghada SunExpress also sells flights by its partner Air Cairo, and a different price applies there: a sports package for €50.

Prices and rules are from the SunExpress website on 25 October 2026. The table shows "from" prices; your booking shows the exact amount for your flight. On flights to and from the UK, the board fee is from £44.99 prepaid and from £70 at the airport.

The general side of flying with kite gear (packing, batteries, claims) is in flying with kite gear: airline fees and packing.

Up to half price in advance

SunExpress says booking sports baggage in advance via My Bookings or customer service saves up to 50% of the fee. I wouldn't leave it to the airport.

What's different about SunExpress

The board is named, the kites aren't

The table says "All boards (sail-, surf-, kite-, body-, snow- or other boards)", so a kiteboard clearly belongs there. Kites, bar and harness aren't mentioned separately. I'd ask customer service to confirm they can go in one bag with the board as a single item, and save the reply.

Size: watch the length

Sports equipment can be up to 84cm high and 122cm wide. If it's longer than 158cm, oversize fees apply. At the airport, the checked baggage page lists €45 per piece on international flights. I'd measure the bag before buying the ticket.

Heavy bags and liability

For checked baggage, SunExpress says items of 23 to 32kg count as Heavy Baggage and it takes no responsibility for handling damage to them. The page doesn't say whether that covers sports equipment too. So I'd pack the board as if nobody will be gentle with it; how is in kite board bags and flying with your gear.

Air Cairo flights to Hurghada

SunExpress sells flights by its partner Air Cairo to Hurghada from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, including Munich, Frankfurt, Berlin, Zurich and Vienna. SunExpress only acts as a broker; Air Cairo sets the rules.

  • Sports package (Board among others): €50 online during booking or via My booking. The page doesn't say whether that's per way.
  • Suitcase: 20kg allowance; excess is charged by Air Cairo at check-in.
  • Check-in at the Air Cairo counter; online check-in isn't available.
  • Baggage claims go directly to Air Cairo.

So before paying, check in your booking who operates the flight. That decides whether the SunExpress table or the Air Cairo package applies.

Batteries and CO2 cartridges

  • Power banks: up to 160Wh, a maximum of 2, in hand baggage or on you only. No charging during the flight.
  • Spare camera batteries: hand baggage only, protected against short circuit, up to 20; for 100-160Wh a maximum of 2.
  • CO2 cartridges: a life jacket can have 2 cartridges fitted and 2 spares up to 50ml.

Practical tips

  1. Book it in advance via My Bookings, ideally with the ticket. At the airport a board costs from €70 one way.
  2. Weigh the bag before the flight home too. Over 30kg you pay €10 per kg; over 32kg it isn't accepted.
  3. Save the booking confirmation and customer service's reply as screenshots.
  4. Report damage at the airport straight away at the lost & found desk; the report is required for a claim. What to check in your policy is in travel insurance for kitesurfing.

Where SunExpress can take you kiting

SunExpress describes itself as one of the biggest airlines between Germany and Turkey, also flying holidaymakers to Egypt. For kiters the main draw is Hurghada: the SunExpress website offers it from Cologne/Bonn, among others, and from many more airports with partner Air Cairo. The spots nearby are in kitesurfing in Hurghada and El Gouna.

On the kite safari in Egypt I go on, there are pumps and a compressor on board and a twintip costs €60 for 6 days (2026 prices), so you can leave the pump and the board at home. The kite safari packing list covers what else to bring.

Questions

Does SunExpress accept kitesurf equipment?

Yes. SunExpress has an all boards category in its sports equipment table that names kiteboards. Kites themselves aren't mentioned, so I'd confirm with customer service that they can go in the same bag as the board.

How much does SunExpress charge for a kiteboard?

On international flights, all boards cost from €44.99 prepaid and from €70 at the airport, per one-way trip (25 October 2026). Up to 30kg per item is included; above that it's €10 per kg and route. On UK flights it's from £44.99 prepaid and from £70 at the airport.

Do SunExpress sports fees apply on Air Cairo flights to Hurghada?

No. On Air Cairo flights from Germany, Austria and Switzerland to Hurghada brokered by SunExpress, you buy a sports package for €50 online and Air Cairo's rules apply. The checked baggage allowance is 20kg.

How far in advance do I need to register a kiteboard with SunExpress?

SunExpress recommends telling it about special baggage 48 hours before departure. Its FAQ says surf equipment can be registered via My Bookings or the call centre up to 36 hours before departure.
