SAS kitesurf equipment: fees, weight limits and how to pack
SAS doesn't list kitesurf equipment among its sports baggage, so you need approval from SAS Customer Service at least 24 hours before departure. It doesn't publish a fixed price for a kite bag.
SAS doesn't list kites or kiteboards among its sports equipment on 25 October 2026. For anything not on its list, it asks you to get approval from SAS Customer Service at least 24 hours before departure. There's no published price for a kite bag; for comparison, skis, snowboards and golf bags cost €40 between Scandinavia and Europe. The sports fee table doesn't say whether that's each way or for the whole trip.
This is based on SAS's English website on 25 October 2026, where fees are also shown in euros. Prices change, so check again before you book.
The general side of flying with kite gear is covered in flying with kite gear: airline fees and packing.

Kite gear isn't listed: what to do
SAS names only golf, skis, snowboards and bikes as sports equipment. For anything else, it asks you to get approval from customer service at least 24 hours before departure. Sports equipment that hasn't been pre-booked may not be accepted for travel, SAS says.
Approval first, then fly
Here's how I'd go about it:
- Weigh and measure the packed bag: length, width, height and kilos.
- Contact SAS Customer Service as soon as you've booked. List the contents: kiteboard, number of kites, bar, harness, size and weight.
- Ask 4 things: will they take it, what will they register it as, what does it cost each way, and can board and kites go in the same bag.
- Save the reply and have it on your phone at check-in.
Point 3 isn't overkill. SAS says special baggage may contain only the item it's registered as, and additional items aren't permitted.
What a return trip costs
SAS doesn't publish a kite bag price, so there's no total to work out. These are the known fees that may apply. The sports equipment table doesn't say whether its prices are each way, so the return figures for sports assume you pay in each direction. Heavy bags and suitcases are explicitly charged each way.
| Item (Scandinavia and Europe) | Listed fee | Return |
|---|---|---|
| Skis, snowboard, golf, more than 22 hours ahead (for comparison) | €40 | €80 if charged each way |
| Bike, more than 22 hours ahead (for comparison) | €45 | €90 if charged each way |
| Sports equipment less than 22 hours ahead | €75 | €150 if charged each way |
| Heavy bag 23.1-28kg, airport only | €65 each way | €130 |
| Heavy bag 28.1-32kg, airport only | €105 each way | €210 |
| 23kg suitcase on a fare without checked bags | €20-105 each way by route | per booking |
A suitcase is cheaper if you add it at least 14 days before departure. Standard includes 1 x 23kg, Premium 2 x 23kg and Business 2 x 32kg; Economy Light has no checked bag.
What's different about SAS
Only some can swap a suitcase for sports gear
SAS lets EuroBonus Silver, Gold and Diamond members and Premium and Business travellers replace an included bag with sports equipment, but only golf, a bike, skis or a snowboard. Kites aren't on that list. Whether they'll make an exception is something you'll only find out when you ask for approval.
The 158cm and 23kg limits
A regular checked bag on SAS can measure up to 158cm in total; anything longer is special baggage. A twintip bag usually goes over that. Kites, bar and harness without the board often fit in a regular suitcase under 158cm, but I'd still mention the contents when you ask for approval.
Listed sports equipment can weigh 23kg. Bags of 23-32kg or over 158cm carry a flat fee per bag and each way, payable at the airport only.
Partner and charter flights
On a ticket with several airlines, SAS says the allowance is generally set by the airline marketing the longest flight, and fees and policies may then be set by the other airline. Charter flights have different rules for special baggage, so check space with your travel agent or tour operator before you go.
Batteries go in the cabin
- Power banks: 2 at most, up to 100Wh, carry-on only; no using or charging them on board.
- Spare camera batteries: up to 20 at 100Wh and 2 larger ones up to 160Wh, protected against short circuits and not in the overhead bin.
On 25 October 2026 we couldn't find SAS's rules for life jackets with a CO2 cartridge. Its list of items that aren't permitted includes compressed gases, so ask about the jacket when you get approval.
Where SAS can take you kiting
SAS's fee tables list flights from Scandinavia to Agadir, Marrakech, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote and Madeira. The Canary Islands spots are in kitesurfing in the Canary Islands, Morocco in kitesurfing in Morocco.
Practical tips
- Changes by phone or chat carry a €30 service fee at SAS; changes under My trips don't. Do online what you can.
- Weight on the way home: a wet wetsuit and sand add kilos, so weigh the bag again before the return flight.
- Packing: fins off the board, kites deflated, bar wrapped. More in kite board bags and flying with your gear.
- Insurance: photograph the bag and its contents. What your policy should cover is in travel insurance for kitesurfing.
On the kite safari in Egypt I go on, there are pumps and a compressor on board and a twintip costs €60 for 6 days (2026 prices), so you can leave the board at home and fit kites and bar in a suitcase. The kite safari packing list covers what else to bring.
