Qatar Airways kitesurf equipment: fees, weight limits and how to pack
Qatar Airways takes kitesurf equipment as part of your checked baggage allowance. You pay extra when it doesn't fit by weight or, on flights to and from Africa, by size.
Qatar Airways carries kitesurf equipment within your checked baggage allowance, with no extra charge as long as it fits. You pay in two cases: when the kite bag takes you over the weight, or when you fly to or from Africa and the bag is longer than a normal checked bag may be. Then sporting equipment allowance costs USD 180 per piece up to 23kg.
Everything below is from the Qatar Airways website as of 25 October 2026. Prices there are in US dollars; its terms say you pay in the currency of the departure country. General advice on flying with kite gear (packing, claims) is in flying with kitesurf equipment.

Qatar mentions kites explicitly in its windsurfing guidance: windsurf and kitesurf boards must be dismantled, measure less than 300cm, and anything larger is carried as cargo.
What it costs return
Africa (Zanzibar, say), kite bag up to 158cm and 23kg, fare with 2 pieces: the kite bag and suitcase are both in the allowance, USD 0.
Africa, kite bag longer than 158cm: you need sporting equipment allowance even if it's within the weight. Up to 23kg it's USD 180 each way, USD 360 return. For a bag between 23 and 32kg: USD 250, USD 500 return.
Measure your kite bag first
Other routes, kite bag only, up to 20kg: fits every Economy fare, USD 0.
Other routes, 20kg kite bag + 10kg suitcase on a 25kg allowance: you're 5kg over. On the sports rate table that's USD 150 (up to 10kg band) each way, USD 300 return. The page doesn't say outright whether the band is set by the excess kilos or by the weight of the whole equipment; in the second case a 20kg kite bag would fall into the USD 200 band. The exact price shows up when you buy it in your booking. On a 30 or 35kg fare, USD 0.
What's different about Qatar Airways
The 158cm limit to and from Africa
This is the big one with Qatar Airways. On flights to and from Africa and the Americas, a checked bag can't exceed 158cm in total. If your kite bag with the board is longer, you need sporting equipment allowance up to 300cm. On other routes, the limit for a normal checked bag is already 300cm.
Sports rates only up to 6 hours before departure
The sports rates apply when you buy the allowance at least 6 hours before departure: online, at an office, through the contact centre or the travel agent who made your booking. At the airport, standard additional baggage rates apply, and Qatar says online is cheaper. The outbound airport may also charge a handling fee for special baggage.
Free cancellation
You can cancel or change special baggage free of charge. Under the terms, the value goes towards another date or back to you as a refund, at Qatar Airways' discretion.
Batteries and CO2
You can carry up to 2 power banks of up to 100Wh, in cabin baggage only, and you can't recharge them in flight. They count towards the limit of 20 spare batteries. A lifejacket may contain up to 2 small CO2 cartridges, with a maximum of 2 lifejackets per person and 2 spare cartridges per device.
Practical tips
- Check how many pieces or kilos your ticket includes (Manage booking or your booking confirmation).
- Dismantle the board and pack the fins separately or with the board.
- Pad the bag well, with nothing sharp sticking out.
Choosing and packing a bag is covered in kite board bags and flying with your gear. What to look for in a policy is in kitesurfing travel insurance.
Where kiters fly with Qatar Airways
Qatar Airways sells flights to Zanzibar. That's Africa, so the 158cm limit and USD 180 per direction for a longer kite bag apply. The spots are in kitesurfing in Zanzibar.
If the 158cm limit makes the trip awkward, you don't have to bring a board. On the kite safari in Egypt I go on, a twintip costs €60 for 6 days to rent (2026 prices), and the pumps and compressor are on board.
Questions
Does Qatar Airways accept kitesurf equipment?
Yes, as checked baggage within your ticket's allowance. Qatar Airways mentions windsurf and kitesurf boards explicitly: they must be dismantled for travel and measure less than 300cm (length + width + height).
How much does Qatar Airways charge for sports equipment?
If the gear doesn't fit your allowance, sports rates apply when bought up to 6 hours before departure: on flights to or from Africa, Argentina, Brazil, Canada and the USA USD 180 per piece up to 23kg and USD 250 for 23-32kg; elsewhere USD 150 up to 10kg, USD 200 for 10-20kg and USD 250 for 20-30kg (25 Oct 2026).
Can I take a kite as normal checked baggage on Qatar Airways?
Yes, if it fits the size and weight limits of your allowance. On flights to and from Africa or the Americas, checked bags can't exceed 158cm in total, so a longer kite bag (up to 300cm) needs paid sporting equipment allowance even if it's within the weight.
How many power banks can I take on Qatar Airways?
Up to 2 power banks of up to 100Wh each, in cabin baggage only. You can't recharge them in flight, and they count towards the limit of 20 spare batteries.
