Norwegian takes kitesurf equipment and names it outright: its sports category is called Surfboards and kiting equipment. A bag up to 23kg costs €40-45 online or €50 at the airport, per item and each way. Norwegian charges it on all flights and doesn't say it can replace the suitcase in your fare.

This is based on Norwegian's English website on 25 October 2026, where fees are listed in euros. Prices change, so check again before you book.

The general side of flying with kite gear is covered in flying with kite gear: airline fees and packing.

What a return trip costs

The website doesn't break down by route where in the €40-45 range your flight falls. LowFare+ includes 1 x 23kg checked bag and Flex 2 x 23kg, while LowFare includes none.

Situation Return
Kite bag up to 23kg, online 2 x €40-45 = €80-90
Kite bag up to 23kg, at the airport 2 x €50 = €100
Kite bag + suitcase, LowFare+ €80-90, suitcase in the fare
Kite bag + suitcase, LowFare €80-90 + suitcase 2 x €19-45 before check-in (international)

A checked bag bought during or after check-in costs €45 on a direct flight and €90 with a connection, per item and flight. Buy everything online in advance.

What's different about Norwegian

Kite gear is named

Surf and kite share one category, so there's no guessing which bucket your bag falls into. I'd still save a screenshot of the sports equipment page and have it ready at the desk.

Kite gear only in the bag

Clothes go in the suitcase

The bag may only contain surf or kite equipment. Norwegian says clothing goes in your regular checked bag. Board, kites, bar and harness go in the kite bag; hoodies and T-shirts don't. The website doesn't say whether a wetsuit counts as kite gear, so I'd only use it as padding around the board and expect a question at the desk.

The kite bag and your fare's suitcase

Norwegian says special baggage, such as skis or golf bags, can't be ordered as checked baggage, and it charges sports equipment per item and each way on all flights. Nothing on the website says a kite bag can replace the suitcase in a LowFare+ fare. Budget for the fee on the higher fares too.

Weight and size

The kite bag can weigh 23kg. On its sports equipment page Norwegian says checked bags over 23kg are charged €15 per kilo, per leg, and nothing over 32kg is accepted. The board can be up to 250 x 79 x 112cm; further down the same page there's a sports equipment limit of 300cm total (length + height + width). The two don't quite match, since 250 + 79 + 112 is 441cm. A bag within 300cm total meets both; for a longer bag or a surfboard I'd get the size confirmed.

Batteries and CO2 cartridges

  • Power banks: 2 per passenger at most, hand baggage only, and not to be used on board.
  • Spare camera batteries: cabin only, protected against short circuits; up to 100Wh max 20, 100-160Wh max 2.
  • Life jacket with CO2: up to 2 cartridges fitted and 2 spares, max 2 jackets per passenger; it needs approval from check-in staff.

Practical tips

  1. Weigh the bag at home. The limit is 23kg, and a wet wetsuit and sand add weight on the way back.
  2. Move clothes to your suitcase. The kite bag is for gear only.
  3. Use a hard case or padded bag and label it with your name and phone number. How to pack board, kites and bar is in kite board bags and flying with your gear.
  4. Be on time. Bags must be dropped off at least 1 hour before departure.

Norwegian says its optional service charges are generally non-refundable, with some following the ticket's refund rules, so only add the kite bag once your plans are firm. Its liability for baggage is limited by the Montreal Convention, so I'd photograph the bag and its contents before check-in. What your policy should cover is in travel insurance for kitesurfing.

On the kite safari in Egypt I go on, there are pumps and a compressor on board and a twintip costs €60 for 6 days (2026 prices), so you can leave the board at home. The kite safari packing list covers what else to bring.
