Etihad carries kitesurf equipment as part of your checked baggage allowance, with no separate sports baggage fee. Kiteboard / kitesurf is named on its list of surfboards and water sports boards. You only pay when the kite bag takes you over the kilos or pieces on your fare.

This is based on Etihad's website on 25 October 2026. Etihad publishes extra baggage prices in US dollars, so that's what I use here. The general side of flying with kite gear (packing, batteries, claims) is covered in flying with kite gear: airline fees and packing.

What a return trip costs

There's no kite fee, so it all comes down to your fare. On most routes, say via Abu Dhabi to Zanzibar or Sri Lanka, weight-based allowances apply: the kite bag and suitcase share one allowance.

Situation Extra to pay
Kite bag only, up to 20kg, Value fare (25kg) $0
20kg kite bag + 10kg suitcase, Comfort fare (30kg) $0
20kg kite bag + 10kg suitcase, Value fare (25kg) 5kg extra
Kite bag on a Basic fare the whole bag is extra

Etihad sells extra weight in 5kg steps. For the Europe region it lists $44 to $125 per 5kg for trips to Africa, Asia and the Indian subcontinent. Manage my trip shows the exact price. The table doesn't say whether that price covers one direction or the whole return trip, so I'd budget for one payment each way: $88 to $250 there and back.

Higher fare can work out cheaper

What's different about Etihad

Kite gear counts towards your allowance

Etihad doesn't have a sports baggage price list. The kite bag simply counts as checked baggage, so on weight-based routes spare kilos in your suitcase help. You can check several bags as long as the total fits your allowance and no single bag weighs over 32kg. You can also share the allowance with others on the same booking.

Morocco and Tunisia use pieces

To and from Morocco, Tunisia, the US and Canada, Etihad counts pieces instead of kilos: 2 bags of 23kg in Economy (not Basic). The kite bag is one of them and has to stay within 23kg. An extra bag to Morocco or Tunisia costs $260 up to 23kg and $300 up to 32kg at the airport (tickets issued on or after 29 July 2026).

300cm and fins

Equipment can be up to 300cm long; anything longer only flies as cargo. Etihad warns that some airports have stricter size limits. Fins and keels must be removed or properly protected. How to pack a board that survives the baggage handlers is in kite board bags and flying with your gear.

Basic has no checked bag

The Basic fare includes no checked baggage, and Etihad Guest baggage benefits don't apply either. So you buy the kite bag separately. Etihad says it's up to 65% cheaper online: up to 4 hours before departure on weight-based tickets, 30 hours on piece-based ones.

Partner flights and the US

Your allowance for each part of the journey is shown on your ticket. If your trip starts or ends in the US, the first airline you fly decides the rules: either its own or those of the most significant carrier, usually the one flying the longest leg. On connections with another airline, check its kite rules too.

Batteries

Power banks and spare batteries go in your cabin bag only, each one protected. Lithium-ion batteries can be up to 100Wh, and Etihad says only 2 such batteries may be carried. Batteries of 100-160Wh need authorisation. You can't use or charge a power bank on board.

Practical tips

  1. Weigh the kite bag and suitcase and compare the total with the allowance on your ticket.
  2. Measure the bag length: the limit is 300cm.
  3. Buy extra weight online, not at the airport.
  4. Save screenshots of your allowance and the water sports rules on your phone.

For expensive gear, Etihad lets you raise its liability: for $125 you increase the cover for declared items in checked baggage. Any payout still depends on proven loss or damage. Report damage at the airport, or in writing within 7 days. If your bag gets a Limited Release Tag at check-in, Etihad won't accept damage claims for it. What your policy covers is in travel insurance for kitesurfing.

Where Etihad can take you kiting

Etihad flies Prague to Abu Dhabi direct in around 5 hours 20 minutes. Its baggage calculator lists Zanzibar, Colombo in Sri Lanka and Casablanca in Morocco among its destinations. The spots are in kitesurfing in Zanzibar, kitesurfing in Sri Lanka and kitesurfing in Morocco.

You don't have to bring a board, though. On the kite safari in Egypt I go on, a twintip costs €60 for 6 days (2026 prices) and there are pumps and a compressor on board. The kite safari packing list covers what else to bring.

Yes. Etihad lists kiteboard / kitesurf among surfboards and water sports boards that travel as part of your checked baggage allowance. The equipment can be up to 300cm long; anything longer has to go as cargo.

How much does Etihad charge for a kiteboard?
