Transavia carries kitesurf equipment and names the kiteboard directly: 1 bag with a kiteboard (or a surfboard, wave board or bodyboard) up to 32kg. You pay per one-way trip: €52 on Transavia's Dutch site, €60 on its French site. Clothes aren't allowed in that bag.

Transavia flies under 2 flight number prefixes: HV for flights to and from the Netherlands and Belgium, TO for flights to and from France. The Dutch and French versions of the website only differ on price for water sports gear. The website doesn't say which price applies to which flight, so check it when you add the bag to your booking.

This is based on Transavia's website on 25 October 2026. The general side of flying with kite gear (packing, batteries, claims) is in flying with kite gear: airline fees and packing.

What a return trip costs

Situation Return
Kite bag, Dutch site price 2 x €52 = €104
Kite bag, French site price 2 x €60 = €120
Kite bag + 20kg suitcase online, HV flight €104 + 2 x €33-61 = €170-226
Kite bag + 20kg suitcase online, TO flight €120 + 2 x from €36 = from €192

For the suitcase combinations I've paired the Dutch site price with HV flights and the French site price with TO flights. The website doesn't link them explicitly.

Transavia says suitcase prices vary by destination, flight and time of booking, and the booking shows the actual rate. At the airport a 20kg suitcase costs €80 on HV flights and €70 on TO flights, per one-way flight, so buy it online.

Plus doesn't cover the kite bag

The Plus fare includes 20kg of checked baggage and Max includes 30kg. Transavia doesn't say whether a kite bag can use those kilos. For the Max fare, though, it says special baggage is booked separately in My Transavia. I'd budget for the kite bag fee on every fare.

What's different about Transavia

Kiteboards named, clothes banned

Transavia names the kiteboard under water sports and lists a kite surfing bag as special baggage. The bag is only meant for water sports equipment; anything else, such as clothes, goes in another suitcase. Kites, bar and harness aren't listed by name, even though they're kiting gear.

Sports gear is always special baggage

A normal checked bag on Transavia can weigh up to 32kg and measure up to 165cm in total. Sports equipment, kitesurfing gear included, is always special baggage regardless of its size. So the kite bag pays the water sports fee, not an oversized baggage fee.

Register early, space is limited

Each flight can only take a limited quantity of special baggage, so Transavia wants water sports equipment declared before the flight, ideally when you book. You can add it later in My Transavia, but only until you check in and no later than 2 hours before departure. Once you've checked in, the booking can't be changed.

If you booked through a travel agent, tell them or use My Transavia. For that case, the website gives a window of 3 weeks to 48 hours before your return flight departs.

Batteries and gas cartridges

  • Lithium batteries and power banks: up to 20, each up to 100Wh, in cabin baggage only, in their original packaging or with taped contacts, each in a separate plastic bag.
  • On flights to Tel Aviv, Transavia doesn't carry lithium batteries (except in wheelchairs).
  • CO2 cartridges for a life jacket: we couldn't find Transavia's rules on its website on 25 October 2026. If you're bringing one, ask the Service Centre first.

How to pack a bag that survives the baggage handlers is in kite board bags and flying with your gear.

Practical tips

  • Weigh the bag at home. The limit is 32kg and you can't top it up with clothes anyway, so the number of kites is what to watch.
  • Add the bag with your ticket. Special baggage space is limited.
  • Skip the household stretch film. Transavia's checked baggage rules don't allow soft plastic bags or packaging made from basic materials such as household stretch film.
  • Check in as early as you can. Transavia recommends it to allow time for baggage screening.
  • Keep on your phone the payment confirmation for the sports bag and a screenshot of the rules.

Where Transavia can take you kiting

On its French site, Transavia lists Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria (Las Palmas) and Tenerife, Dakhla, Essaouira and Agadir in Morocco, Sal and Boa Vista in Cape Verde, plus Djerba and Hurghada. The Dutch page on Dakhla calls it a favourite in the world of kitesurfing, but on 25 October 2026 it showed no flights from the Netherlands.

The island spots are in kitesurfing in the Canary Islands and Morocco in kitesurfing in Morocco. On the kite safari in Egypt I go on, there are pumps and a compressor on board and a twintip costs €60 for 6 days (2026 prices), so you can leave the board at home. The kite safari packing list covers what else to bring.

Questions

Can I take a kiteboard on Transavia?

Yes. Transavia names kiteboards under water sports equipment and lists a kite surfing bag as special baggage. It carries 1 bag up to 32kg containing only water sports equipment, with no clothes. Kites, bar and harness aren't listed by name.

How much does Transavia charge for sports equipment?

Water sports equipment costs €52 per one-way trip on Transavia's Dutch site and €60 on its French site (25 Oct 2026). A return trip is therefore €104 or €120.

Can I take a kite bag as normal checked baggage on Transavia?

Transavia doesn't say so. It treats sports equipment as special baggage regardless of its size, and even for the Max fare it says special baggage is booked separately in My Transavia. Plan on paying the water sports fee.

When do I need to register my kite bag with Transavia?

Before your flight, ideally when you book, because each flight can only take a limited amount. You can add it in My Transavia up to 2 hours before departure, as long as you haven't checked in.
