Wizz Air carries 1 piece of sports equipment up to 32kg for €55 to €65 per flight online, or €70 at the airport. Kites and kiteboards aren't on its sports equipment list, though surf equipment is. Unlisted gear is carried after approval, which you request via Live Chat at least 72 hours before departure.

Everything here comes from Wizz Air's UK website as of 25 October 2026. The fee table is in euros and can be switched to other currencies, including pounds.

For how other airlines compare, see airline fees for kite gear.

What it costs for a return trip

Option Online At the airport
1 kite bag up to 32kg 2 x €55 to €65 = €110 to €130 2 x €70 = €140
kite bag + 20kg suitcase €110 to €130 + 2 x suitcase fee depends on route

The fee table lists a 20kg bag at €10 to €112.50 per flight in low season and €12 to €122 in high season. Wizz Air's high season runs 21 March-20 April 2026, 12 June-30 September 2026 and 15 December 2026-10 January 2027. You'll see the exact price for your route when you book.

32kg for one fee

Compared with low-cost airlines that stop at 20kg, this helps: you pay the same fee all the way up to 32kg. That's room for more gear in one bag without worrying about excess weight.

What's specific to Wizz Air

Kitesurfing isn't listed, so approval decides

Wizz Air's list covers skis, snowboards, surf equipment and golf bags, plus bikes, diving gear and a few other items. Kites aren't on it. For "other sporting equipment", Wizz Air says it can be carried after approval and asks you to contact Live Chat at least 72 hours before departure.

Space is limited

Wizz Air has limited space for sports equipment on each flight and recommends adding it when you book. You can add it later in your WIZZ Profile, up to 3 hours before departure, but there may be no space left.

Same size limit as a suitcase

On Wizz Air, checked-in bags have the same maximum size as sports equipment, 149 x 119 x 171cm, and come in a 32kg version. WIZZ Go includes a 20kg checked bag and WIZZ Plus a 32kg one. Wizz Air's website doesn't say whether a kite bag may travel as an ordinary checked bag. Ask about that in the same chat as the approval.

Packing

Wizz Air says it doesn't provide packaging material and won't carry equipment that isn't packed properly. I'd put the board in a board bag, the kites in their own backpacks and unscrew the fins. More on that in kite board bags and flying with your gear.

Batteries: just 1 power bank

Wizz Air is stricter on batteries than IATA's general guidance: a maximum of 20 spare batteries per person, including no more than 1 power bank. Power banks over 100Wh are forbidden; batteries of 100 to 160Wh need approval, with a maximum of 2. Spare camera batteries and power banks go in the cabin, under the seat in front or in the seat pocket, not in the overhead locker.

Expensive gear

For checked-in baggage, Wizz Air offers a High Value Declaration of up to €2,500. You hand the form in at the check-in desk (not at a self bag drop kiosk), pay the fee at the airport and need proof of value. It covers one direction, so you fill it in again for the flight home. I couldn't find the fee amount on the website.

Practical tips

  1. Message Live Chat before you pay for the ticket and get your kite bag confirmed.
  2. Add sports equipment with the ticket. Online is €5 to €15 cheaper than at the airport, and you secure the space.
  3. Weigh the bag at home. Wizz Air won't accept sports equipment over 32kg.
  4. Keep on your phone the payment confirmation, the chat reply and a screenshot of the rules.

When you'd rather not bring everything

On the kite safari in Egypt I go on, there's a compressor and pumps on board and you can rent a twintip for €60 for 6 days (2026 prices). So you can leave the pump and board at home. The kite safari packing list covers what else to bring.

What to look for in a policy is in kitesurfing travel insurance: what to check. Rules for other low-cost airlines: Ryanair and Vueling.
