Kitesurfing wind window: how a kite pulls and where

The kitesurfing wind window is the arc of sky downwind of the rider in which the kite can fly. It is roughly a quarter of the surface of a sphere with a radius equal to your line length, and the pull inside it changes a lot from one spot to another.

The kitesurfing wind window is the arc of sky downwind of the rider in which the kite can fly. It spans about 180 degrees and covers roughly a quarter of the surface of a sphere with a radius equal to your line length. When you stand facing downwind on the water, the window covers about everything you can see: from the edge of your vision on one side across the horizon to the other side and back over the sky above your head.

That shape explains why the same kite pulls hard in one spot and almost nothing in another. The pull is not a property of the kite alone. It depends on where in the window the kite sits, how fast it moves through the air and how much wind reaches it.

Kite clock: where the kite is

The kite clock is a way to describe kite position relative to the rider on the upwind side of the window. 12 o'clock means straight overhead, the position also called the zenith. The furthest left is 9 o'clock and the furthest right is 3 o'clock. Those two positions are the launch and landing spots.

The clock gives instructor and student a shared reference point: when someone says the kite is at 3, everyone knows where to look.

Zones of the window

The window is not uniform: the kite behaves very differently at its edge and on its downwind side.

Zone Where it is What the kite does
Edge / neutral zone the upwind edge of the window, from 9 to 12 to 3 o'clock Flies with minimal force
Power zone downwind side, roughly 0-60 degrees from the downwind center Maximum pull, highest kite speed

In the neutral zone the kite flies with almost no pull, which is why launch and landing happen there. In the power zone the kite reaches its greatest speed, up to 5-10x the wind speed with the best kites, and that is where it generates maximum force.

Why a kite pulls harder when it moves

A stationary kite in light wind gives little pull. Move it and the picture changes. The force of wind on a kite is proportional to the square of the speed of the air moving around it. Raise the airspeed around the kite 10x and the force grows 100x.

This is apparent wind: the speed of the kite relative to the surrounding air. Most ways of increasing force come down to increasing apparent wind, whether by moving the kite, riding faster or riding at a sharper angle into the wind.

Riders raise force by flying the kite along an S-shaped path. For a large increase they loop the kite, which is an advanced and risky move.

What happens outside the window

If the kite leaves the window, it stalls and often drops out of the sky. A common way to get there is riding too fast downwind, so the kite ends up overhead and behind you. An inefficient kite can shrink the window to as little as 120 degrees.

A kite that stops and falls out of the sky because of too little wind, or because it ends up upwind of the rider in the window, is called a Hindenburg. Luff means the airflow around the kite breaks up, and the kite can stall and fall.

Line length and window size

Line length sets the size of the window. Longer lines catch wind in a larger volume and higher up, where it is stronger, but the kite responds more slowly. Wave riders use shorter lines. Beginners learn on short lines that limit how much force the kite can build.

A school bar with 12 m lines shrinks the wind window noticeably and reduces the force the kite develops, which raises student safety. Once the basics are mastered, lines can be extended to 24 m. A standard bar has 22 m lines and a 2 m extension set. If you want the details on bars and lines, see kite bar and lines.

Safety zone and fall zone

The fall zone is the area under the window where the kite can fall, plus the kite span and the length of the deployed leash after you release the quick release. Beyond it lies the safety zone: 3x your line length, which the pilot should keep clear of obstacles.

Stopping a kite takes time and distance, and the zone grows as the wind rises. A careful rider keeps the safety zone clear on the upwind side too and does not let others come close. The basics of staying safe are covered in kitesurf safety.

How to use this in practice

Launch and land at 9 or 3, at the edge of the window, where the kite pulls least. The zenith is the neutral position where the kite can sit still or wait before you move it. The full picture of how a kite and rider work together is in what is kiting.

Start and land at the edge

  1. Set up at the edge of the window, at 9 or 3 o'clock.
  2. Keep the kite low, around 45 degrees, in gusty conditions.
  3. Cross 12 only to move the kite from one side to the other.
  4. Keep the safety zone of 3x your line length clear.

Before you handle a full-size kite, a trainer kite lets you feel how position in the window changes the pull. Wind strength and gusts decide how much of the window you can safely use, so it helps to understand wind for kitesurfing and gusty wind. The size of the kite you fly changes the force too, which is why what size kite do I need matters as much as where you put it.

Questions

What is the wind window in kitesurfing?

It is the arc of sky downwind of the rider where the kite can fly, a 180-degree span roughly equal to a quarter of a sphere with the radius of your lines. Outside it the kite stalls and often falls.

Where is the power zone?

On the downwind side of the window, usually 0-60 degrees of arc from the downwind center. A kite flying forward with its leading edge there reaches its highest speed and generates maximum pull.

Why does the kite pull harder when I move it?

Moving the kite raises the airspeed around it, and force grows with the square of that speed. Increasing airspeed 10x raises the force 100x.

What is the kite clock?

A way to describe kite position relative to the rider on the upwind side of the window. 12 is straight overhead, 9 is far left and 3 is far right, and 9 and 3 are the launch and landing positions.

How long should kite lines be for a beginner?

Schools use short lines, for example 12 m, which shrink the wind window and reduce the force the kite builds. A standard bar has 22 m lines with a 2 m extension set.

What happens if the kite leaves the wind window?

It stalls and often drops out of the sky. This can happen when you ride too fast downwind and the kite ends up overhead and behind you.
